The spiny water flea(Bythotrephes cederstroemi) is not an insect but a small crustacean, about half an inch long with a long, sharp, barbed tail spine. It is native to Great Britain, and its home range extended through northern Europe east to the Caspian Sea. It was first found in Lake Huron in 1984, and was most likely introduced from ballast water discharge from a trans-oceanic freighter. Since then, populations of the crustacean have exploded and it can now be found throughout the Great Lakes and in many inland lakes and waterways.

This factsheet describes the development of sediment assessment tools for the near-shore areas of the Great Lakes of North America. Two types of biological sediment assessment tools, developed by the National Water Research Institute and Ontario Region of Environment Canada, are described : biological guidelines for the assessment of freshwater sediment based on community-based criteria, or the BEnthic Assessment of SedimenT(BEAST) bioassay guidelines based on toxicity scores that compare normal bioassay responses for sediments from reference sites to responses for sediments from sites of concern. These tools are recommended for the assessment of sediment in harbours and embayments for possible remediation, and for assessing sediment removed in navigational or other dredging projects.

These vessels declare "no ballast on board"(NOBOB) and therefore are not subject to comply with the standard ballast water management procedures for ballasted vessels.... NOBOB ships cannot completely empty their ballast tanks due to structural and pumping limitations and, as a result, they can still contain residual amounts of ballast water and sediment. This water and sediment provide a potentially suitable environment for organisms in various life stages to survive and be introduced into the Great Lakes if this added water is subsequently discharged at another port.
