Thanks to its strong network of state, provincial, federal and regional partner agencies and organizations, GLIN has become a necessary component of informed decision making, and a trusted and reliable source of information for those who live, work or have an interest in the Great Lakes region.

The Network is made up of individuals, government and non-governmental organizations, schools and universities along the more than 3, 000 kilometres of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. Every day, data on water quality and the ecosystem are collected and transmitted to the Biosphere. The information is then available to anyone who wants it.

The GLIMR pilot project is a computerized meta-database that describes databases and information about the Great Lakes in a user-friendly manner. It is both a source and a marketing tool for information belonging to Environment Canada-Ontario Region, the National Water Research Institute, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and Atmospheric Environment Service. Its purpose is to provide non-stop shopping for information about the Great Lakes via an interactive computer network.
