The Wisconsin glaciation – the most recent glacial event in North America – was the primary driver of change in the geography of the Great Lakes Region. The Mohawks, who were commonly referred to as Iroquois by the French, formed a League of Five Nations of the people of the Longhouse several generations prior to the arrival of Europeans on the North American continent. The Oneidas, "Standing Stone People", had their villages west of the Mohawks around Oneida Lake. The Onondagas, "Peoples" of the Hills", settled along Onondaga Creek; the Cayugas, "Great Pipe People", by Cayuga Lake; the Senecas, "People of the Great Mountain", alongside Canadaigua Lake... The Five nations refer to themselves as the "Hotinonsonni" which translated into English means "The People of the Longhouse". The French used the term "Iroquois Confederacy" while the British used the term "Six Nations Confederacy" when referring to the Hotinonsonni... The Hotinonsonni allied themselves into one League. They compared themselves to a long bark house, where there would be five fireplaces, but all would form one family. The Mohawks are the keepers of the eastern door of that Longhouse. The Onondagas, in the centre, are the firekeepers, and they are the capital of the League. The Senecas are keepers of the western door. 1, record 12, English, - Hotinonsonni

The French used the term "Iroquois Confederacy" while the British used the term "Six Nations Confederacy" when referring to the Hotinonsonni. In the 1700's, the Tuscaroras, "the People of the Shirt", were accepted by the Hotinonsonni as the sixth nation. 1, record 13, English, - Six%20Nations%20Confederacy

This factsheet describes the development of sediment assessment tools for the near-shore areas of the Great Lakes of North America. Two types of biological sediment assessment tools, developed by the National Water Research Institute and Ontario Region of Environment Canada, are described : biological guidelines for the assessment of freshwater sediment based on community-based criteria, or the BEnthic Assessment of SedimenT(BEAST) bioassay guidelines based on toxicity scores that compare normal bioassay responses for sediments from reference sites to responses for sediments from sites of concern. These tools are recommended for the assessment of sediment in harbours and embayments for possible remediation, and for assessing sediment removed in navigational or other dredging projects. 1, record 39, English, - Benthic%20Assessment%20of%20Sediment

1, record 39, French, - Benthic%20Assessement%20of%20Sediment

The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) was a major European conflict that arose in 1701 after the death of the last Spanish Habsburg king, Charles II. Charles had bequeathed all of his possessions to Philip, duc d’Anjou - a grandson of the French King Louis XIV - who thereby became Philip V of Spain. The war began slowly, as the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I fought to protect his own dynasty’s claim to the Spanish inheritance. As Louis XIV began to expand his territories more aggressively, however, other European nations (chiefly England and the Dutch Republic) entered on the Holy Roman Empire’s side to check French expansion (and, in the English case, to safeguard the Protestant succession). Other states joined the coalition opposing France and Spain in an attempt to acquire new territories, or to protect existing dominions. The war was fought not only in Europe, but also in north America, where the conflict became known to the English colonists as Queen Anne’s War. 1, record 48, English, - War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession

The north walk of Lincoln's Inns Fields was renamed Canada Walk, 30 October 1945. The site was rededicated by the Prime Minister of Canada, the Rt. Honourable Jean Chrétien and the Mayor of Camden, Alderman Ray Adamson, 14 May 1998. In a building opposite at 20 Lincoln's Inn Fields was the Headquarters of the Royal Canadian Air Force in Great Britain during the Second World War. This HQ provided central support to some 85, 000 Canadian personnel who served in 48 RCAF Squadrons and with numerous RAF units. The boreal forest is divided into two great transcontinental belts of approximately equal size : the subarctic open lichen woodland and the closed crown forest. This major horizontal sectioning of the two areas reflects the steady dropping of temperature from south to north. The more northern subarctic lichen woodland is a handsome landscape mostly unknown to Canadians because of its few settlements and roads(and also very abundant black flies!). Northern stands of scattered spruce and jack pine, accompanied by balsam fir in Quebec, form attractive open-canopied areas carpeted with yellow, green and light grey lichens. Recently burned areas are covered with birch, blueberries and other small evergreen shrubs. 2, record 69, English, - lichen%20woodland

1, record 71, English, - Cayuga

1, record 71, French, - Cayuga
