The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 1, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

This class of wheat is grown in the Great Plains area of the U. S. which includes the states of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, South Dakota and Wyoming. In 1981, it formed about 40% of total U. S. wheat production. The wheat is a strong type(gluten quality) and its flour produces good bread. Its average protein content is in the range of 12 to 13%; normally it has good test weight(75 to 77 kilograms per hectolitre) and is low in moisture content(11 to 12%). With proper conditioning it gives good milling results. The most prominent varieties of this group in 1981 were Newton, Larned, Eagle and Scout. Hard red winter wheat has no subclasses for grading purposes. It is assigned numerical grades but has somewhat higher(2 pounds for No. 1 and 1 pound for other grades) test weights. 1, record 7, English, - hard%20red%20winter%20wheat

The term "blue norther" is most commonly associated with Texas. Various other names for the same phenomenon exist over the central and southern Plains [California norther, etc.]. There are also various theories as to the exact origin of the term. In general it is associated with a rapidly moving cold front (usually in the Autumn) that causes temperatures to drop quickly and that often brings with it precipitation and unsettled weather, followed by a period of blue skies and cold temperatures. 3, record 10, English, - blue%20norther

Dust Bowl refers to a series of destructive wind and dust storms that struck the United States during the 1930's. These storms ranked among the worst environmental disasters in world history. Most of the damage occurred from 1935 to 1938 in the southern Great Plains, and so this area also became known as the Dust Bowl. Altogether, the storms damaged about 50 million acres(20 million hectares) of land, mainly in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. An additional 50 million acres were endangered before conservation measures began to take effect. 1, record 12, English, - dust%20bowl

The Atmospheric Boundary Layer Experiments(ABLE) is a research initiative devoted to atmospheric research. This project has been developed by the Atmospheric Section of Argonne National Laboratory. The ABLE is located on the lower Walnut Watershed, mostly in Butler County east of the city of Wichita, Kansas. This location is within the existing boundaries of DOE's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement(ARM) Southern Great Plains(SGP) Clouds and Radiation Testbed(CART) site. The establishment of this facility offers a virtual atmospheric observatory and provides essential research tools for addressing a myriad of unresolved fundamental questions in atmospheric research. The alternative to depending on training sites for classification is to apply the concept of signature extension. This term refers to the assumption that a single, more or less constant, spectral signature may be defined as characteristic of any class, and that this signature has broad(universal) applicability to any scene in a region, or even worldwide. As a specific example, the signature for winter wheat at its maturation should be essentially the same for fields in the U. S. Great Plains, Argentina, the Ukraine, and Australia-provided such variables as differing air masses, Sun position, soil types, soil moisture, etc. are compensated for. If that proves true, then an unknown feature or class in a given scene anywhere should be classifiable by comparing its spectral properties(for a Landsat pixel, its multiband digital number [DN] values) to a "data bank" containing standard values for each of many classes. The closest fit of the unknown's DN [digital number] values to those of some one class in the bank is assumed to identify it. 3, record 15, English, - signature%20extension

Semi-arid regions often form on the margins of deserts, or in rainshadow basins. They are more hazardous than deserts because, from time to time, there is enough rainfall to support farming, which encourages people to overdevelop them and leads to catastrophe when a long period without rain follows... The Sahel of Africa is a region of semi-arid climate with a large population where disasters due to rain failures are common. The Great Plains region of North America is a semi-arid region. DOTHISTROMA NEEDLE BLIGHT caused by Dothistroma pini can infect all two or three needle pines, but only ponderosa and Austrian pines are highly susceptible. Early symptoms appear in late summer or early fall as deep green bands with a water-soaked appearance and as yellow or tan spots. The spots and bands turn brown to reddish-brown. The ends of infected needles gradually die and turn brown. Tiny black fruiting bodies develop near the infection band in late fall or the following spring. Infected needles drop prematurely.
