GREAT SENSITIVITY [9 records]

Record 1 2013-09-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Security
CONT

Each fixed-site detector owes its great sensitivity and very low false-alarm rate to the use of two ion-mobility spectrometry sensors that are operated in tandem.

PHR

Low, high false alarm rate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments scientifiques
  • Sécurité
CONT

Chaque détecteur ponctuel transportable doit son excellente sensibilité et son très faible taux de fausse alarme aux deux détecteurs spectrométriques de mobilité ionique qui fonctionnent simultanément.

Each fixed-site detector owes its great sensitivity and very low false-alarm rate to the use of two ion-mobility spectrometry sensors that are operated in tandem.

  • Physique
CONT

DEF

A soft, sensitive mouth.

CONT

... a good mouth is one that responds to our orders with great sensitivity, becoming in this sense, akin to the instrument board in a cockpit... A good mouth-sensitive, healthy and of good conformation-can easily be damaged by clumsy, heavy-handed management, which may even cause injuries to different structures and decrease sensitivity.

Record 4 2011-05-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Scientific Instruments
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

[A] family of related detectors [which] is based upon changes in the conductivity of electricity through gases arising as a result of the presence of charged particles and ions in the gas. These ions may be created by combustion (as in the flame ionization detector), transfer of energy (in the argon detector), or by ß ionization (in the cross-section and electron capture detectors).

OBS

The first detector of this series that was developed was the cross-section detector although the most widely used is the flame ionization detector. Their great popularity rests in their wide applicability and high sensitivity.

OBS

Biodegradable Coatings for Thermoplastic Starch... Starch can be used alone and in combination with other biodegradable polymers to make many useful articles. Starch absorbs water rapidly when it comes into direct contact with it. By absorbing water, the physical properties of the starch-based articles are changed. By coating the starch-based articles with water resistant biodegradable polymers such as poly(lactic acid), poly(hydroxybuterate-co-valerate) and polycaprolacton, the starch-based articles do not absorb water as fast as uncoated articles. The coated articles’ physical properties do not change as much as uncoated ones after direct contact with water. The coatings used in this study do not adhere well enough to the starch-based articles for commercial use. Polymer coatings for starch-based articles show great promise in alleviating some of the water sensitivity associated with these types of products.

Subject field(s)
  • Titles of Films
OBS

Title of a film produced in 1988 by the National Film Board. Information confirmed by the organization. Through four moving portaits, this film sheds light on the tragedy of elder abuse which takes many forms, ranging from neglect and financial exploitation to physical assault. With great sensitivity, this film portrays the emotional complexity of family relationships that can lead to elder abuse, the anguish and isolation of its victims and the tremendous need for understanding and support from the community.

Subject field(s)
  • Lichens
CONT

Sulfur dioxide damage to epiphytic lichens is well-known and has long been studied. It seems that the sensitivity of some of the lichen species is great enough to cause damage at concentrations tolerable to most other plants, including conifer trees. The economic value of the lichens is as a rule not great, and their main direct importance is that they may be used as indicators.

CONT
