The most important city of the province of Quebec, but not its capital. It occupies all the Île de Montréal(or Montréal Island), the biggest island of the Hochelaga Archipelago, at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River and the Ottawa River. In 1535, Jacques Cartier visited the native village of Hochelaga on the slope of what he named "Mont Royal, "but by 1608, year of the foundation of Québec, all the Iroquoians were gone. At the same location, Ville-Marie was founded as a missionary colony by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve in 1642, though it was not until the conclusion of the "Grande Paix"(peace treaty) of 1701 that the colony stopped living in a permanent state of war. The establishment became the great centre of the fur trade and a starting point for expeditions by the coureurs de bois and voyageurs of the time. Trade from the port and agriculture on the surrounding plains contributed to the development of the city. By the 1820s, its population outnumbered that of the city of Québec. A dynamic merchant class began to invest and "St. James Street, "now "la rue Saint-Jacques, "became the country's financial centre. Around 1831, large-scale immigration enabled the population of British origin to be the majority in the city but, at the time of Confederation in 1867 and after, the francophones were again in the majority, gradually making the city the centre of the French culture in America. Erected as a municipality in 1832, the city underwent a steady growth with the addition of the territories of 35 towns over the years. If Toronto grabbed the title of "Business Capital" by the end of the 20th Century, Montréal remained the "Metropolis of Canada. "In 1996, the metropolitan region grouped some 111 municipalities located on three of the islands of the Hochelaga Archipelago, Montréal Island, Jésus Island and Bizard Island, and, on the South Shore, the city of Longueuil and the seven others that were to be part of it on the 1 January 2002... 2, record 2, English, - Montr%C3%A9al

The marathon, which also is known as the Marathon of Peace, will take runners and walkers through the Belgium battlefields of the First World War. The timing is particularly appropriate, given that November 11 will mark the 85th anniversary of the end of the Great War. The United States Declaration of Independence is a statement adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, which announced that the thirteen American colonies then at war with Great Britain were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the Declaration is a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2 to declare independence from Great Britain, more than a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. Déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis. [...]

Book Review by Sharon Varette, March 3, 2003. This book picks up where Hargrove's first book, Masterful Coaching, leaves off, serving as a textbook for those interested in learning more about coaching, and as a compelling reference guide for those managers already actively coaching others. Its overarching theme is that "great leaders of inspired, high performance organizations are always, first and foremost, coaches and teachers…(with coaching viewed) as everything you do as a manager to(1) win the war for the best talent;(2) maximize performance on demand in the face of change, complexity, and competition; and(3) ignite personal and team learning while building organizational capability. 1, record 25, French, - Masterful%20Coaching%20Fieldbook

The Lest We Forget Project is the inspiration of Blake Seward, a history teacher at Smiths Falls District Collegiate Institute, in Smiths Falls, Ontario. Concerned that the contributions of those who died serving in the First World War have been largely forgotten, Seward began researching the military history of his own great uncle, who fought and died at Passchendaele. Seward soon realized that this type of research would be an exciting way to make history come alive in the classroom. It would give students the opportunity to document the life stories of the men and women who served in the First World War. 1, record 26, English, - Lest%20We%20Forget

1, record 26, French, - Nous%20nous%20souviendrons%20d%27eux

The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) was a major European conflict that arose in 1701 after the death of the last Spanish Habsburg king, Charles II. Charles had bequeathed all of his possessions to Philip, duc d’Anjou - a grandson of the French King Louis XIV - who thereby became Philip V of Spain. The war began slowly, as the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I fought to protect his own dynasty’s claim to the Spanish inheritance. As Louis XIV began to expand his territories more aggressively, however, other European nations (chiefly England and the Dutch Republic) entered on the Holy Roman Empire’s side to check French expansion (and, in the English case, to safeguard the Protestant succession). Other states joined the coalition opposing France and Spain in an attempt to acquire new territories, or to protect existing dominions. The war was fought not only in Europe, but also in north America, where the conflict became known to the English colonists as Queen Anne’s War. 1, record 27, English, - War%20of%20the%20Spanish%20Succession

The Canada Memorial commemorates an extraordinary co-operation between two nations in two world wars. The contribution made by Canada was generous and unconditional. It was accepted by Great Britain on the understanding that Canada's participation, with both personnel and material, implied no degree of imperial subordination but was offered from one sovereign nation to another in testimony of long association and mutual strategic interest. Canada joined in the war effort in the full knowledge that Britain's urgent need for her help derived from a threat that did not menace her immediately but posed nevertheless a moral challenge which the nature of Canadian nationhood demanded should be confronted and outfaced. There were no means, either in 1914 or 1939, by which Britain might have bound Canada to a war effort. It was precisely because Canada nevertheless declared a combatant alongside Great Britain that her brotherhood-in-arms was so deeply appreciated and is now commemorated in the Memorial which was unvieled on June 3 1994. 1, record 28, English, - Canada%20Memorial

Green Park, Londres.

It was established in 1904 by Arthur Balfour, then British Prime Minister, as an advisory committee for the Prime Minister, one that would be small and flexible; it replaced the Cabinet's decrepit Defence Committee. 1, record 30, English, - Committee%20on%20Imperial%20Defence

On the insistence of Great Britain and, subsequently, the United States of America, this exception to the rule of non-intervention has been accepted in State practice since the last century. If revolutionaries have shown a certains taking power in more than a purely local area, other States may grant them recognition as insurgents or belligerents. The difference between these two forms of limited recognition is one of degree. In recognising revolutionaries as insurgents, the intention is to refrain from recognising any right to wage war on, or above, the high seas. It is also likely to be the intention of the recognising State to refuse to grant extraterritorial validity to acts of such insurgent authorities. 1, record 42, English, - recognition%20as%20insurgents
