Therefore, there are different kinds of electromagnetic radiation: infrared, radio waves, microwaves, gamma rays, X rays, etc. Only a small fraction can be detected by the human eye: the visible light -- what in everyday-life is referred to simply as ’light’. The human eye cannot detect wavelengths larger [or shorter] than those of the visible light ... 2, record 15, English, - green%20light

1, record 15, French, - lumi%C3%A8re%20verte

Symptoms : All aboveground plant parts may be affected. Large, light green leaf spots develop on the upper leaf surfaces. Under moist conditions, a white to gray moldy appears on the lower or upper leaf surfaces. Affected leaves may wilt, then die. If environmental conditions become unfavorable for downy mildew, plants may show recovery by developing healthy leaves, or other pathogens may be encouraged. During fall wet periods, most young petioles or leaves are covered with a fungal growth that often moves into the crown. Crown infections may permit other root-decay organisms to invade the plant. Crown infection causes excessive leaf proliferation which in turn causes misshapen bulbs. 5, record 17, English, - sugar%20beet%20downy%20mildew

deconvolution microscope : using the deconvolution microscope, researchers can see the locations of target molecules inside the cell. Seeing where glowing molecules reside within a cell is helpful for a range of research projects--from studies of how the distribution of various proteins changes during an organism's development to investigations of how administration of a drug alters the locations of certain proteins. The microscope, called DeltaVision, is manufactured by Applied Precision, based in Issaquah, Wash. It works by magnifying images and quantifying the intensity of light shed by the sample. The user specifies which colors of light are of interest. For instance, a user can program the microscope to report the intensity of a particular shade of green shining from the cytoplasm of a cell. After a researcher uses the microscope to make a series of optical slices through a specimen, the scope's computer "deconvolves" the images--in other words, it subtracts the out-of-focus light. Then the computer stacks together the images of the slices to reconstruct the original microscope sample. This gives researchers gh-resolution images of the sample's three-dimensional structure. 2, record 19, English, - wide%20field%20deconvolution%20microscopy

Bioluminescence in Renilla is due to the luciferase-catalyzed oxidation of luciferin. Anderson and Cormier have isolated a membrane-bounded, subcellular particle containing luciferase, a luciferin-binding protein with its associated luciferin and a green fluorescent protein all of which are necessary for bioluminescence and its control. When subjected to hypotonic solutions of calcium, these particles produce a flash of green light identical to the in vivo luminescence of Renilla. These particles, identified as the apparent sites of bioluminescence in Renilla, have been termed lumisomes. 3, record 37, English, - lumisome

The arrangement of the beam-penetration CRT is similar to that of normal CRT's; the only unusual component is the multilayer phosphor, in which a layer of red phosphor is deposited behind the initial layer of green phosphor. If a fairly low-potential electron beam strikes the tube face, it excites only the red phosphor and therefore produces a red trace. When the accelerating potential is increased, the velocity of the beam striking the phosphor is greater, and as a result the beam penetrates into the green phosphor, increasing the green component of the light output. 1, record 48, English, - beam%2Dpenetration%20CRT

An idle-stop system, also commonly known as a start-stop system, is essentially what makes up today's increasingly popular so-called mild hybrids.... The battery in a mild hybrid is still very important, but its main purpose is as a part of the idle-stop system that shuts off the gasoline engine when a mild hybrid is at rest, coasting or slowing down. For instance, a stop at a red light at an intersection will cause the engine to cut off. When the car is idle, no gas will burn inside the engine. Once the light turns green and the driver applies pressure to the gas pedal, the engine should switch back on seamlessly, as though it hadn’t been turned off at all. 1, record 49, English, - idle%2Dstop%20system

6, record 59, French, - longueur%20d%27onde%20de%20la%20lumi%C3%A8re

When a pyranometer is oriented downwards it measures the reflected shortwave radiation, and is thus called an albedometer. When two pyranometers are associated, one oriented upwards and the other downwards, the net short wave radiation is measured. The instrument is then called a net pyranometer. A point of caution is that any instrument used as an albedometer or net pyranometer must have mil sensitivity to all spectra of visible light. This is important since the composition of reflected light from vegetation is highly biased toward green. 3, record 62, English, - net%20pyranometer

Tomato mosaic virus used to be common and widespread, but most modern cultivars are resistant. The virus exists in several strains that cause a variety of symptoms. Its common symptom is light to dark green mottling on the leaves, often accompanied by wilting of young leaves on sunny days when plants first become infected. The leaflets of affected leaves are usually distorted, puckered, and smaller than normal. The plant is reduced in size and becomes pale green and spindly... Disease symptoms are greatly influenced by temperature, day length, light intensity, age of plant, virus strain, and cultivar of tomato. Various strains of tomato mosaic virus cause winter necrosis, summer necrosis, or crusty-fruit diseases... 3, record 72, English, - tomato%20mosaic%20virus

Yellow Sigatoka. The first symptom of the disease is the appearance of yellow-green specks in the lower surface of the third and fourth youngest open leaf. The specks elongate and expand into clearly visible brown streaks. As the streaks further increase in size, they become elliptical brown spots surrounded by a yellow halo that separate the spot from the normal green leaf tissue. When the spots become fully developed, the central areas turn gray, which eventually are surrounded by dark brown or black margin with yellow halo. The spots group together to form large areas of light brown, dried-up leaf tissues. This leads to premature dying of the leaves. 4, record 75, English, - yellow%20Sigatoka

When the sun sets, sometimes the last bit of light from the disk itself is an emerald green. The same is true of the first bit of light from the rising sun. This phenomenon is known as the "green flash" or "green ray". It is not an optical illusion. The green flash is common and will be visible any time the sun is rises or sets on a "clear", "unobstructed", and "low" horizon.... The explanation for the green flash is thus, 1) refraction separates the solar images by color; 2) at just the right instant, the red image has set, 3) the yellow image is absorbed; and 4) the blue image is scattered away. We are left with the upper limb of the green image. Because the green flash is primarily a refraction effect, it lasts longer and is easier to see from a mountain top than from sea level. 3, record 92, English, - green%20flash

Winds blowing southward along the west coast of the United States--because of friction and the effects of Earth's rotation--cause the surface layer of the ocean to move away from the coast. As the surface water moves offshore, cold, nutrient-rich water upwells from below to replace it. This upwelling fuels the growth of marine phytoplankton which, along with larger seaweeds, in turn nourish the incredible diversity of creatures found along the northern and central California coast. Sensors such as SeaWiFS can "see" the effects of this upwelling-related productivity because the chlorophyll-bearing phytoplankton reflect predominantly green light back into space as opposed to the water itself which reflects predominantly blue wavelengths back to space. 4, record 96, English, - sea%2Dviewing%20wide%20field%2Dof%2Dview%20sensor

Description of the pest. In addition to the black bean aphid and foxglove aphid, which are discussed separately, about ten other species of aphids are found on celery. Of these, green peach aphid [85K] and hawthorn/parsley aphid(also known as the rusty banded aphid) are the most common. These aphid species vary in color(from light green to black), size, and shape. Further processing and utilization of refined soybean oil : Freshly refined soybean oil is practically odourless and bland. However, objectionable off-flavour described as "green, grassy, fishy" is known to develop quickly if the oil is heated(as in cooking and frying), or stored under conditions which expose it to light and oxygen or permits contamination with certain metals such as copper and iron. This type of flavour deterioration has been called "flavour reversion", expressing the thought that it brings back the off-flavours of crude oil. 2, record 99, English, - flavour%20reversion

In a ruby laser, a rod of ruby is irradiated with the intense flash of light from xenon-filled flashtubes. Light in the green and blue regions of the spectrum is absorbed by chromium ions, raising the energy of electrons of the ions from the ground state level to one of the broad F bands of levels. Electrons in the F bands rapidly undergo non-radiative transitions to the two metastable E levels. A non-radiative transition does not result in the emission of light; the energy released in the transition is dissipated as heat in the ruby crystal. 2, record 100, English, - non%2Dradiative%20tansition
