CONT

Honeycrisp apples are oblate to roundly oblate in shape... Skin color is 60 to 90 percent distinctive mottled red over a yellow background. A nearly solid red coloration develops only if the fruit is well exposed to the sun. The fruit surface has shallow dimples and numerous, small lenticels(dots) with green russeting at the stem end. Honeycrisp fruit is characterized by an exceptionally crisp and juicy texture. Its flesh is cream colored and coarse. The flavor is sub-acid and ranges from mild and well-balanced to strongly aromatic, depending on the degree of maturity.

CONT

"Pickling" refers to cucumbers that are primarily used for processing or pickling. Pickling cucumbers have thin skins, are short and blocky, and usually have a color gradient from dark green at the stem end to light green at the blossom end. In addition, a pickling cucumber fruit has a whiter or lighter green belly(where fruit and soil are in contact) than does a slicing cucumber.

CONT

Cucumbers can be pickled for flavor and longer shelf-life. As compared to eating cucumbers, pickling cucumbers tend to be shorter, thicker, less regularly-shaped, and have bumpy skin with tiny white- or black-dotted spines. They are never waxed. Color can vary from creamy yellow to pale or dark green. Pickling cucumbers are sometimes sold fresh as “Kirby” or “Liberty” cucumbers.

CONT

Cucumbers are grown for fresh consumption (called slicers) and pickling (called picklers) ...

Record 4 2007-04-26

English

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
CONT

The disease is caused by a late infection by the tomato mosaic virus, which usually severely affects the fruit on one or two clusters without affecting other fruit at all. The characteristic symptoms of internal browning are noticeable when the fruit is cut across near the stem end. In slightly diseased fruit only a few small brown areas may occur. External symptoms are gray or grayish brown areas that often show through the translucent skin of the green or partly ripe fruit. These appear occasionally as blotchy, ill-defined areas. In severely diseased green or ripe fruit much of the flesh tissue of the wall is brown.

French

CONT
