Honeycrisp apples are oblate to roundly oblate in shape... Skin color is 60 to 90 percent distinctive mottled red over a yellow background. A nearly solid red coloration develops only if the fruit is well exposed to the sun. The fruit surface has shallow dimples and numerous, small lenticels(dots) with green russeting at the stem end. Honeycrisp fruit is characterized by an exceptionally crisp and juicy texture. Its flesh is cream colored and coarse. The disease is caused by a late infection by the tomato mosaic virus, which usually severely affects the fruit on one or two clusters without affecting other fruit at all. The characteristic symptoms of internal browning are noticeable when the fruit is cut across near the stem end. In slightly diseased fruit only a few small brown areas may occur. External symptoms are gray or grayish brown areas that often show through the translucent skin of the green or partly ripe fruit. These appear occasionally as blotchy, ill-defined areas.
