GREEN STONE [8 records]

Record 1 2026-05-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Urban Planning
  • Urban Development
  • Ecology (General)
CONT

The introduction of green surfaces on the building envelope follows completely [the] principle [of reconciliation ecology], creating habitats, although of reduced dimensions, on the same land used by humans as living space. These green islands can help in protecting wildlife and increasing wildlife diversity, both creating their own island habitats and working as "stepping stone" habitat in order to connect natural isolated areas. In the case of a green extensive roof, the substrate can be left to spontaneous colonization by plants and animals(brown roof), with a benefit for the variety of native species.

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Radiological Physics (Theory and Application)
CONT

X-ray powder diffraction analysis(XRPD) was proven to be a very powerful tool for the study of "green stone" Neolithic axes and other artifacts. The amount of material to be sampled can be reduced to a few milligrams, thus making it a quasi-non destructive method.... If the dimension of an object is adequate(up to 60 cm in bulk, depending upon the shape) it can be directly analyzed, by XRPD, without sampling. Even a rough, irregular surface, both on flat and bent objects, is suitable for the analysis. The XRPD analysis is, therefore, totally non-destructive and is obviously very adapt to analyze many different materials, such as pigments, stones, ceramics, metals, patinas, salts efflorescences etc.

Subject field(s)
  • Concrete Construction
  • Masonry Practice
  • Construction Finishing
DEF

The finish produced by stoning.

CONT

Rubbing a concrete surface is done with a stone on a wetted and preferably green surface. This abrasion in the presence of moisture works up a thin mortar which fills in surface irregularities and tends to produce a uniform mat finish. The greener the concrete, the stronger and better bonded this skin will be. The rubbed surface must be cured. Executed properly, the rubbed finish will last a long time.

OBS

rubbed finish: term standardized by BSI.
