Long-lived climate forcers refer to a set of well-mixed greenhouse gases with long atmospheric lifetimes. This set of compounds includes carbon dioxide(CO2) and nitrous oxide(N2O), together with some fluorinated gases. They have a warming effect on climate. These compounds accumulate in the atmosphere at decadal to centennial time scales, and their effect on climate hence persists for decades to centuries after their emission.

What is the upper atmosphere? The neutral atmosphere consists broadly of the thermosphere and the ionosphere. Vers une océanographie «opérationnelle» pour mesurer l'impact des activités humaines sur les évolutions climatiques. Quel est le rôle de l'homme dans l'effet de serre? Peut-on indéfiniment rejeter du gaz carbonique dans l'atmosphère, sachant qu'une majeure partie sera aussi absorbée par les océans? Pour répondre à ces questions, une océanographie nouvelle, destinée à mesurer l'impact de l'homme sur les dérèglements du système océans/atmosphère, est en train de s'organiser au niveau mondial.

CONT

Le réseau CLIMOD (CLImate MODelling) contribue à l'effort international pour une meilleure compréhension du système climatique et pour une meilleure évaluation de l'impact des activités humaines sur le climat aux échelles globale et régionale.

My principal purpose with "Global Warming : Are we entering the greenhouse century?" is to make the basic issues and policy implications of global atmospheric change more accessible to the public... Incidentally, to answer responsibly the question posed in the subtitle of this book takes eight chapters. But the one line response is simple : I believe we are already a decade or two into the greenhouse century; a decade or two more should prove that beyond a reasonable doubt.

Because the greenhouse disruption will presumably take place as we enter the twenty-first century, the greenhouse age can alternatively be known as the "greenhouse century".

The oceans influence the climate response in two fundamentally important ways. First, because of the importance of the H2O greenhouse feedback, the response of the tropospheric temperatures and even the land surface temperatures would be governed by the warming of the ocean surface. If for some reason the ocean does not respond to the greenhouse heating, the H2O feedback would be turned off since increased evaporation from the warmer ocean is the primary source for increasing atmospheric H2O.
