Established in 1992, the Gwich’in Tribal Council(GTC) is an Aboriginal organization that represents Gwich’in Beneficiaries in the Mackenzie-Delta of the Northwest Territories and across Canada. The objectives of the GTC are to : protect and preserve the rights, interest and benefits of the Gwich’in in reference to their use, ownership and management of lands, waters, and resources in the Gwich’in Settlement Area; retain, preserve and enhance the traditional and cultural values, customs and language of the Gwich’in in a changing society; develop and promote economic, social, educational and cultural programs that will enable the Gwich’in to become self-sufficient and full participating members in a global society; uphold the rights, interest and benefits of the Gwich’in in reference to the Constitution Act, Treaty 11 and the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement; and The GTC accomplishes these objectives through various wholly-owned organizations such as the Gwich’in Settlement Corporation, the Gwich’in Social and Cultural Institute, and the Gwich’in Development Corporation.

The Mackenzie Valley Resource Management Act(MVRMA) came into being in 1998 as a result of the Gwich’in and Sahtu Comprehensive Land Claims Agreements. The Act created co-management boards for both the Gwich’in and Sahtu settlement areas and it established the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board(MVLWB). The Board's Vision for itself is to be : A forum for regional decision making, ensuring effective participation of residents in the use, protection, and benefits of the lands and waters of the Mackenzie Valley. To fulfill this vision, the Board seeks to communicate to stakeholders all the information necessary for them to participate where possible.

The Yukon Transboundary Agreement between Canada and the Gwich’in Tribal Council forms Appendix C of the Gwich’in Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement. The Agreement sets out the rights of the Tetlin Gwich’in in Yukon. Tetlin Gwich’in refers to Gwich’in who reside in the Peel River watershed, or who are descendants from such a person. The Agreement provides for the transfer of 1554 square kilometres of land to Tetlin Gwich’in. Legal ownership is vested in the Gwich’in Tribal Council. The Yukon lands designated in the Agreement combine with Northwest Territories lands to form the Gwich’in Settlement Region.
