Gyros that have stops(not many these days and not the case for the gyros in the CJ6) can be damaged by acro [acrobatics] when they are running. They should be stopped and preferably caged when doing acro. "Smooth" positive-G acro(no snap or tumbing maneuvers) shouldn’t hurt these gyros if they are powered down even if they are not caged.... When you subject that spinning gyro to your aircraft's twists and turns during aerobatics you are imparting more force on its bearings than you would were the gyro turned off and not spinning. It is usually bearing wear the trashes a gyro. This problem is especially severe when you are doing advanced aerobatics. It is really hard on the gyro bearings. I would rather have the gyros turned off to make them last longer. That we have caged or uncaged gyros is really irrelevant to the basic physics involved. 1, record 1, English, - uncaged
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Gyro driven instruments should be caged before aerobatics to avoid tumbling the gyros which action can cause damage to the bearings. In addition, of course, the instrument is useless until the gyro is erected again. 2, record 1, English, - uncaged

The successful results of this effort... belong to the Naval Weapons Support Center, its contractor Singer-Kearfott, Little Falls, NJ, and their subcontractor, Dixon Corporation, Bristol, RI. The new material is a porous polyimide called Meldin 9000. The material was first developed by Dynatech Corporation in conjunction with a Charles Stark Draper Laboratory gyro improvement program sponsored by the Air Force. Laboratory-produced samples of the new material demonstrated a life of over 3, 000 hours as compared to a life of only 300 hours or less for a traditional material. 1, record 3, English, - Meldin%C2%AE

The vacuum-drive heading indicator is the simplest of many types of gyro-controlled directional indicators designed to provide stable heading reference.... Errors. The chief cause of precession, causing the card to creep or drift, is bearing friction. Normal movement of the gimbal rings produces friction, which is increased if the bearings are worn, dirty, or improperly lubricated. Other sources of precession error include unbalanced gyro components and the effect of the earth's rotation. The latter effect depends upon the position of the instrument in relation to the earth, and is not appreciable unless a flight involves considerable change in latitude. 1, record 9, English, - unbalanced

Rate gyroscopes provide a means for measuring angular rate about a particular axis and are traditionally used in a variety of high accuracy control and guidance systems in aircraft, missiles and ships. The conventional rate gyro, based on a high speed rotor, is a mature but relatively complex, delicate and expensive product. For these reasons and the increasing market for less expensive devices, a great deal of research effort has been invested into the development of a rate gyro with a vibrating sensitive element, which would eliminate the need for ball bearing suspensions and hence reduce the mechanical complexity and cost whilst greatly increasing life and robustness. The principle of operation of these devices is based on the coriolis force, which couples together two degenerate modes of vibration of the sensitive element when the sensor rotates. 1, record 11, English, - conventional%20rate%20gyro

The first type of gyroscopic instrument to successfully reduce gimbal bearing friction to an acceptable level for precision applications was the floated gyroscope. In this instrument the rotating member is sealed within a hollow cylinder which forms the inner gimbal of the gyro. This is mounted in the gyro case with a fluid surrounding the cylinder; the density of the fluid is chosen so as to exactly float the cylinder, thus removing the weight of the inner gimbal from the bearings and greatly relieving the bearing frictional load. 1, record 14, English, - gimbal%20bearing%20friction

The directional gyroscope forms a standard reference for the pilot and navigator. It is a three-frame gyroscope with its spin axis in the horizontal plane. The source of power for the gyro is the engine-driven vacuum pump(or venturi) which sucks air from the rear of the instrument case. 1, record 16, French, - anneau%20vertical
