Gyros that have stops(not many these days and not the case for the gyros in the CJ6) can be damaged by acro [acrobatics] when they are running. They should be stopped and preferably caged when doing acro. "Smooth" positive-G acro(no snap or tumbing maneuvers) shouldn’t hurt these gyros if they are powered down even if they are not caged.... When you subject that spinning gyro to your aircraft's twists and turns during aerobatics you are imparting more force on its bearings than you would were the gyro turned off and not spinning. It is usually bearing wear the trashes a gyro. This problem is especially severe when you are doing advanced aerobatics. It is really hard on the gyro bearings. I would rather have the gyros turned off to make them last longer. That we have caged or uncaged gyros is really irrelevant to the basic physics involved. 1, record 1, English, - uncaged
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Gyro driven instruments should be caged before aerobatics to avoid tumbling the gyros which action can cause damage to the bearings. In addition, of course, the instrument is useless until the gyro is erected again. 2, record 1, English, - uncaged

The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 2, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates ... Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate. 3, record 4, English, - gyro%20drift

Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
2, record 5, French, - inertie%20gyroscopique

The first type of gyroscopic instrument to successfully reduce gimbal bearing friction to an acceptable level for precision applications was the floated gyroscope. In this instrument the rotating member is sealed within a hollow cylinder which forms the inner gimbal of the gyro. This is mounted in the gyro case whith a fluid surrounding the cylinder; the density of the fluid is chosen so as to exactly float the cylinder, thus removing the weight of the inner gimbal from the bearings and greatly relieving the bearing frictional load. 2, record 7, English, - floated%20gyroscope

The rotor of the air-driven gyro is mounted in a sealed housing. Filtered air is brought into the gyro housing through passages in the rear pivot, the gimbal ring, and the side pivots. The attitude indicator (also called the artificial horizon or the gyro horizon) provides the pilot with an artificial horizon as a means of reference when the natural horizon cannot be seen because of cloud, fog, rain or other obstructions to visibility... Record number: 13, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument's little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane. 5, record 13, English, - natural%20horizon

1, record 29, French, - anneau%20vertical
