Open-loop gyro tests examine the warm-up, drift stability, drift coefficients and rate performance characteristics of the gyro packages. Tests are performed with all three gyro packages on the motion table at the same time, and are repeated at 25, 35 and 40 C. The gyro misalignment is measured using the gyro optical alignment cubes. Drift coefficients are determined from multi-position tests. Approximately 60 hours are required to complete the gyro tests. 2, record 1, English, - lack%20of%20stability

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters : scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates... Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate. 3, record 2, English, - gyro%20drift

The free gyro... can be converted to a directional reference by remounting its case with the spin axis horizontal and the indicator axis vertical. The indicator will then give the airplane's heading. Gyroscopic precession... When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments. Its principle effect is on the heading indicator, which tends to drift over time. 8, record 3, English, - precessional%20motion

A gyroscope will not only resist being moved out of its vertical position, it will also generate force as it attempts to travel in large, circular patterns. These patterns are most easily seen with a spinning top. As the top begins losing its energy, it never simply spirals straight down in the same direction that it was originally spinning. As it destabilizes, it will always begin slowly rotating or precessing in a slow, even circle that is in the opposite direction to its normal spinning motion. These circular patterns are known as "precessional" motions, and they are another aspect of a gyroscope’s movement that will occur either in air or in a vacuum and can be used to overcome gravity. 9, record 3, English, - precessional%20motion

... gyros and accelerometers have an offset, known as bias. The gyro bias for instance, shows itself after integration as an angular drift, increasing rise linearly over time(ramp)... To compensate for sensor drift, a process called augmentation is used, whereby gyro and acceleration errors are compensated by utilising other system states. For instance the angular drift error of a gyro after integration can be compensated, if true angular measurements are taken. Comparing the two shows then the gyro drift. Assuming that inertial systems are generally operated around an equilibrium position and thus linear acceleration integrates to zero over time, then attitude can be processed via gravitational acceleration, thus giving true angular measurements to compensate gyro drift. 1, record 4, English, - angular%20drift

Precession error. Frictional forces in the gyros system cause it to precess. This precession causes a creep or drift in the reading on the card, amounting approximately 3 degrees in 15 minutes. Notice that there is no knob to set the heading of the DG [directional gyro] to match that of the compass. Why? Because it is slaved. Slaved? Back in the tailcone of the aircraft, away from all ferrous metal, is a magnetic compass. The output of this compass is electrically "enhanced" and amplified through a "flux gate"... This signal is fed to the HSI to drive the DG portion of the unit. What this means is that the reading is very accurate, not subject to the vagrancies of the regular magnetic compass, and is constantly being corrected for drift. Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters : scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates. This value is used to convert the voltage output from the gyro into an angular rate. System imperfections can cause small variations in the scale factor. These variations appear as a factor at the output of the gyro. Angular velocity is the time rate of change of angular displacement. More simply it is a measure of how fast an object is rotating. For example, the measure of a skater’s spinning speed during a sit spin is called angular velocity. Angular velocity is calculated by subtracting the initial angular position from the final angular position and dividing by the time it took to get from the initial to final position. Angular velocity is measured in radians/second (SI units) or degrees/second or revolutions/second (English units). 4, record 18, English, - angular%20velocity

Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate. 2, record 21, English, - angular%20error

Precession error. Frictional forces in the gyro system cause it to precess. This precession causes a creep or drift in the reading on the card, amounting approximately 3 degrees in 15 minutes. The gyro is also subject to apparent precession. Gyroscopic inertia keeps the spinning gyro fixed in space so that, relative to space, it does not move. But the earth rotating underneath it gives it an apparent motion relative to the earth. This causes an apparent drift, or precession, which varies with latitude... The vacuum-drive heading indicator is the simplest of many types of gyro-controlled directional indicators designed to provide stable heading reference.... Errors. The chief cause of precession, causing the card to creep or drift, is bearing friction. Normal movement of the gimbal rings produces friction, which is increased if the bearings are worn, dirty, or improperly lubricated. Other sources of precession error include unbalanced gyro components and the effect of the earth's rotation. The latter effect depends upon the position of the instrument in relation to the earth, and is not appreciable unless a flight involves considerable change in latitude. 1, record 25, English, - unbalanced

Where positioning accuracy is concerned, it may seem surprising that the accuracy provided by the gyros has more impact than that of the accelerometers... This is due to the fact that navigation in fact occurs on a sphere, the Earth. It will therefore be readily understood that traveling along a straight line on the Earth comes down in fact to a rotation, and that rotation is detected by the gyros. In practice, gyros are subject to a zero-error known as gyro bias : When there is no rotation, a gyro should indicate zero, but in fact measures something that is the bias value. When an inertial navigation system is immobile, the gyros measure bias values that are integrated by the calculator and the unit thinks that it is rotating, and therefore advancing across the surface of the terrestrial globe, which generates a position error. It will be understood that position error shows linear growth over time and there is a direct relationship between the accuracy of a gyro and position drift. 1, record 26, English, - zero%2Derror

The HI is unaffected by these maneuvers and by turbulence, and is a reliable instrument as long as the precession re-adjustment is made in timely fashion. 1, record 44, English, - precession%20re%2Dadjustment

Gyroscopic precession. The reaction of a gyro when a force is applied to the spinning wheel. When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments. Its principle effect is on the heading indicator, which tends to drift over time. 2, record 44, English, - precession%20re%2Dadjustment

2, record 44, French, - correction%20de%20l%27erreur%20de%20pr%C3%A9cession
