A gyroscope instrument for indicating direction, containing a free gyroscope which holds its position in azimuth and thus indicates angular deviation from a pre-set heading. 12, record 1, English, - directional%20gyroscope
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The heading indicator (HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it’s operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i.e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 1, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT

Dead reckoning is a technique of computing the position of a vehicle from its distance and heading measurements. It is an inertial system which uses two independent sensors from which distance and heading information can be extracted. Because each position is relative, cumulative drift errors occur on an average of 2% of the distance traveled. The system consists of a magnetic compass or gyroscope for heading and odometer for distance. Dead reckoning is often combined with map matching to correct for drift errors. It performs well when combined with highly accurate digital maps. It can also be used to back up GPS during satellite visibility outages. 3, record 6, English, - cumulative%20drift

If the gyroscope were a perfect instrument, it would be possible to determine the position of a satellite or a space vehicle with respect to its own fixed axes. But a gyroscope precesses... A very good gyroscope only precesses a few thousandths of a degree of arc in an hour, but at the end of a week the error is about one degree and it is twenty-five degrees at the end of six months. 2, record 7, English, - precess

Gyroscopic precession. The reaction of a gyro when a force is applied to the spinning wheel. When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments. Its principle effect is on the heading indicator, which tends to drift over time. 4, record 7, English, - precess

9, record 7, French, - pr%C3%A9cessionner

The gyropilot, commonly called an automatic pilot(q. v.), consists basically of three devices, each of which detects disturbances for the aircraft in one plane and corrects for these disturbances by moving the appropriate control : the rudder control for azimuth and sudden change in heading(yaw) disturbances, aileron control for roll disturbance, and elevator control for pitch disturbance. In modern gyropilots rate detection forms the principal reference and displacements detection plays a secondary role. In such designs yaw disturbance is detected by a rate gyroscope and the change in heading is detected by the associated gyrocompass. 1, record 8, English, - yaw%20disturbance
