The gyros are used to maintain the platform’s inertial orientation by sensing rotations of the platform caused by vehicle-rotation-induced friction at the gimbal pivot points ... One gyro - called the vertical gyro - is oriented so its input axes are aligned with the X and Y platform axes; its input axes provide IMU [Inertial Measurement Unit] platform roll and pitch stabilization. The second gyro is oriented so that one input axis lies along the platform’s Z axis and the other lies in the X-Y plane. This gyro - the azimuth gyro - provides platform yaw stabilization with the Z input axis, while the second input axis is used as a platform rate detector for built-in test equipment.

The sensors for angular velocity are vibrating gyroscopes(3 axes, to detect rotation and pitch/roll pendulations of the payload). An error signal is obtained differencing the signal from the azimuth gyroscope and a constant level settable from the telemetry, which controls the speed of rotation. Such error signal drives an analog PID [Proportional Integral Differential] circuit; the output of the PID is connected to the PWM [Pulse Width Modulation] driver supplying current to the pivot azimuth motors.

Precession error. Frictional forces in the gyros system cause it to precess. This precession causes a creep or drift in the reading on the card, amounting approximately 3 degrees in 15 minutes. The gyro is also subject to apparent precession. Gyroscopic inertia keeps the spinning gyro fixed in space so that, relative to space, it does not move. But the earth rotating underneath it gives it an apparent motion relative to the earth. This causes an apparent drift, or precession, which varies with latitude... Precession error, both mechanical and apparent, must be corrected for at regular intervals of about 15 minutes.

Lock-in is a fundamental physical phenomenon associated with all oscillating devices. Laser gyros exibit the same phenomenon, in that the coupling mechanism is the reflection of light from one laser beam back along the path where it interacts with the oppositley traveling beam. This is called backscatter and is caused primarily by imperfect mirrors. Therefore, at low rotation rates, there is no frequency difference between the counter-rotating beams so that the gyroscope does not indicate any rotation. In spite of the ring laser gyro's dead zone whith lock-in thresholds on the order of hundreds of degrees per hour, it is still feasible to obtain measurements of rotation rates of less than 1 deg/h.

Angular rate gyro accuracy is characterized by two parameters: scale factor and drift. The scale factor describes the capability of the gyro to accurately sense angular velocity at different angular rates. This value is used to convert the voltage output from the gyro into an angular rate. System imperfections can cause small variations in the scale factor. These variations appear as a factor at the output of the gyro. Gyro drift characterizes the ability of the gyro to reference all rate measurements to the nominal zero point. It appears as an additive term on the gyro output, so any actual drift away from a given or predetermined value will cause the angular errors to accumulate.

Des gyroscopes à suspension électrique sont utilisés dans les centrales inertielles les plus précises (sous-marins nucléaires). Une bille quasiment parfaite joue le rôle du gyroscope. En fonctionnement, cette bille est suspendue, grâce à des forces électrostatiques, à l'intérieur d'une cavité sphérique tapissée d'électrodes. Cependant le gyroscope de verticale utilisé, soumis à des actions extérieures, ne décrit plus la verticale. En 1929 les Allemands créent le gyrorector. Le gyroscope sert désormais à stabiliser la position du pendule, grâce à sa liaison avec un moteur électrique qui corrige les mouvements du pendule. Le gyrorector est équipé d'un niveau à bille pour le dérapage de l'avion.

The detection of the differential phase shift between optical signals counterpropagating in the two possible directions can be performed in a manner similar to that in a conventional gyroscope. Obviously care must be taken to minimize any path differences between the two counterpropagating signals other than that due to the small nonreciprocal Sagnac phase shift caused by rotation of the gyroscope. Rate gyroscopes provide a means for measuring angular rate about a particular axis and are traditionally used in a variety of high accuracy control and guidance systems in aircraft, missiles and ships. The conventional rate gyro, based on a high speed rotor, is a mature but relatively complex, delicate and expensive product. For these reasons and the increasing market for less expensive devices, a great deal of research effort has been invested into the development of a rate gyro with a vibrating sensitive element, which would eliminate the need for ball bearing suspensions and hence reduce the mechanical complexity and cost whilst greatly increasing life and robustness. The principle of operation of these devices is based on the coriolis force, which couples together two degenerate modes of vibration of the sensitive element when the sensor rotates.

A more advanced type of gyro is the optical gyroscope. These devices are based on two counter-rotating beams of light travelling in a ring-like structure. The interaction of the two light beams produces a standing wave pattern. If the ring is then rotated about its centre axis(think of a torus spinning around its core), one of the beams has to travel a slightly longer distance, and the other a slightly shorter distance to get back to where they started. This will cause a shift in the pattern of the standing wave, and this can be measured to determine the rate of rotation.

Most people would remember the classic rotating disc gyroscope, which belongs to the mechanical group. One of today’s high precision gyros is still the mechanical, rotating gyro; however it is dependent on linear accelerations because of its mechanical measuring principle. The optical group comprises the fibre optic- and laser types. These use the Sagnac Effect (named after its French discoverer), which, when the sensor is turned, results in a difference in transit time between two light waves passing through the same optical path but in opposite directions. Three-frame gyroscopes. The unrestrained or "free" three-frame gyroscope has little practical use, because its spin axis is subject to tilting and drifting owing to the rotation of the Earth.

The Two Frame Gyroscope. When the rotor is spinning and the spin axis is in a horizontal plane a definite resistance will be felt owing to gyroscope inertia, at the same time the spin axis will begin to precess in a vertical plane and will continue to do so with sufficient power to lift light weights until all the gyroscopic inertia disappears due to the rotor slowing and stopping. The Three Frame Gyroscope. If the base of a three framed gyroscope is held in the hand with the rotor spinning and turned about any of the three axes, the rotor will continue to point in the original direction in space. This property is known as gyroscope inertia.

L'analyse des données provenant des trois encodeurs optiques du gyroscope démontre sans doute qu'au moins un des axes s'est bloqué très tôt au cours du vol. Le gyroscope n'étant plus libre de pivoter sur trois degrés de liberté, des forces de précession sont probablement apparues, causant des rotations aux axes libres qui ne correspondent pas à des mouvements réels de la fusée en vol. Comme le gyroscope a pu être récupéré, un examen de la structure a été effectué après le vol. L'équipe du Gaul a pu constater que le gyroscope a subi des dommages importants : les cadres externes et internes sont très déformés, l'axe des cadres brisé, plusieurs fils sont rompus et l'encodeur de l'axe des cadres présente une grande résistance à la rotation.
