CONT

A CMG (control moment gyro) is an actuator consisting of a spinner with a sustained kinetic moment modulus h and one or two motor-driven tilt axes. One-axis CMGs are used to generate very high dynamic moments. The produced gyroscopic torque is proportional to h and to the precession rate (i.e. tilting rate). It is orthogonal to the precession axis and is directly transmitted to the satellite by the tilt motor bearings.

CONT

A novel design for an accelerometer using gyroscopic torque to null a pendulous proof mass is being micromachined.

OBS

gyroscopic torque: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

CONT

Couple gyroscopique.

CONT

Inertial Navigation Systems. The various radio navigation systems require the ability to receive position signals from the established beacon locations. For those platforms beyond the range of the navigation signals or with an impeded line of sight, the 1950s witnessed the development of a modern form of dead reckoning. Inertial navigation systems use a device called a gyroscopic accelerometer that accurately measures acceleration in a specific direction. These systems track acceleration, changes in velocity, in three perpendicular directions, such as north-south, east-west, and altitude.

DEF

[Of a gyro or accelerometer] the product of the inertial-sensing mass and the distance from the center of mass to the center of support measured along the pendulous axis.

CONT

pendulous integrating gyroscopic accelerometer : A linear accelerometer using a single-degree-of-freedom gyro having a pendulosity along the spin axis that is servo-driven about the input axis at a rate that balances the torque induced by sensed acceleration along the input axis. The angle through which the servoed axis rotates is proportional to the integral of the sensed acceleration.

CONT

The intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles(SLBM) developed over the past 50 years have employed successive generations of increasingly accurate inertial guidance systems. The comparatively short time of guided flight and high acceleration levels characteristic of the ballistic missile application place a premium on accelerometer performance to achieve desired weapon system accuracy. To date, the accelerometer design of choice for strategic missiles has been the Pendulous Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer(PIGA) instrument, an accelerometer whose origins trace back to the German V2 rocket, and has been refined through several generations of development to achieve unsurpassed performance.
