Le compas gyroscopique est constitué de trois disques gyroscopiques de grande inertie, tournant à vitesse élevée, et montés de façon que leurs plans de rotation soient disposés orthogonalement entre eux. On introduit dans l'appareil diverses informations : latitude, angle horaire, vitesse du mobile, qui permettent d'obtenir une indication de la route suivie.

La boussole gyroscopique ou synonyme gyrocompas, indique le nord géographique grâce à la propriété que possèdent certains gyroscopes d'aligner leur axe de rotation sur l'axe de rotation terrestre lorsqu'ils sont libres de se mouvoir. Les gyrocompas ont actuellement presque supplanté les boussoles magnétiques, dans le domaine naval tout au moins.
