The attitude of a satellite is its position in space-its orientation... To stabilize a satellite, the satellite must have a system that keeps it moving evenly through its orbit. Satellites often use a spinning or gyroscopic motion to keep them stable. 4, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 2 CONT
A gyroscope will not only resist being moved out of its vertical position, it will also generate force as it attempts to travel in large, circular patterns. These patterns are most easily seen with a spinning top. As the top begins losing its energy, it never simply spirals straight down in the same direction that it was originally spinning. As it destabilizes, it will always begin slowly rotating or precessing in a slow, even circle that is in the opposite direction to its normal spinning motion. These circular patterns are known as "precessional" motions, and they are another aspect of a gyroscope’s movement that will occur either in air or in a vacuum and can be used to overcome gravity. 3, record 1, English, - gyroscopic%20motion

An autopilot system operates in the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space. The system incorporates two gyroscopes to control flight in the longitudinal, lateral and vertical axes of the aircraft. If the aircraft deviates from the programmed attitude, the system computer detects the deviation and issues commands to the servo motors which move the primary flight control surfaces as required to return the aircraft to the required flight attitude. 13, record 6, French, - cardan

The axis of the kinetic and dynamic(gyroscopic) moments produced by a CMG are changing in the satellite reference system : they rotate in the plane perpendicular to the tilt axis. Moreover, the higher the dynamic moment, the faster they rotate. Like flywheels, CMGs [control moment gyro] can be considered either as generators of torques applied to the satellite or as generators of kinetic moment exchanged with the satellite momentum. The axis of the kinetic and dynamic(gyroscopic) moments produced by a CMG are changing in the satellite reference system : they rotate in the plane perpendicular to the tilt axis. Moreover, the higher the dynamic moment, the faster they rotate. To generate a kinetic or dynamic moment in a given direction, it is necessary to combine at least three elementary kinetic moments or gyroscopic torques in variable, non-coplanar directions. 1, record 11, English, - kinetic%20moment

Garde-cap.

1, record 11, French, - moment%20cin%C3%A9tique

The intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM) and submarine-launched ballistic missiles(SLBM) developed over the past 50 years have employed successive generations of increasingly accurate inertial guidance systems. The comparatively short time of guided flight and high acceleration levels characteristic of the ballistic missile application place a premium on accelerometer performance to achieve desired weapon system accuracy. To date, the accelerometer design of choice for strategic missiles has been the Pendulous Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer(PIGA) instrument, an accelerometer whose origins trace back to the German V2 rocket, and has been refined through several generations of development to achieve unsurpassed performance. 4, record 12, English, - pendulous%20integrating%20gyroscopic%20accelerometer

Precession error. Frictional forces in the gyros system cause it to precess. This precession causes a creep or drift in the reading on the card, amounting approximately 3 degrees in 15 minutes. The gyro is also subject to apparent precession. Gyroscopic inertia keeps the spinning gyro fixed in space so that, relative to space, it does not move. But the earth rotating underneath it gives it an apparent motion relative to the earth. This causes an apparent drift, or precession, which varies with latitude...
