H II REGION [2 records]

Record 1 1999-02-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrochemistry and Cosmochemistry
  • Astronomy
CONT

Since hydrogen is the main constituent of the gas, we often characterize a region of interstellar space according to whether its hydrogen is neutral-an "H I region"-or ionized-an "H II region". The gas in the H II regions glows by the process of fluorescence. The light emitted from these regions of ionized gas consists largely of emission lines, so they are also called "emission nebulae".

CONT

OBS

Since hydrogen is the main constituent of the gas, we often characterize a region of interstellar space according to whether its hydrogen is neutral-an "H I region"-or ionized-an "H II regions"(...). The cold gases in HI regions are invisible on direct photographs, but they can be observed by their radio emission(...). Also, some of the gases in H I regions produce absorption lines on stellar spectra(...)

OBS
