HABITABLE PAYLOAD [4 records]

Record 1 2014-11-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Space Exploration Equipment and Tools
CONT

Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, is the team leader for Phoenix. Once landed, the probe would be able to make a very accurate analysis of what promises to be some of Mars’ more habitable terrain... In addition to Smith's stereo imaging camera and robotic arm [, ] the Phoenix lander includes an instrument suite designed to completely characterize the accessible ice, soil, rock, and local atmosphere using state-of-the-art methods. Included within the instrument payload are microscopic imaging systems capable of examining materials at scales down to 10 nanometers(i. e., 1000 times less than the width of a human hair), while others will investigate whether organic molecules are contained in ice or soil samples.... Also onboard is a thermal and evolved gas analyzer(TEGA)...

CONT

Special attention is given to the strength verification of beryllium, composites(including honeycomb structures), and glass and ceramic materials. The process also includes verification of structural bonding techniques, payload deformations under loading, interface load capability between the payload and the Orbiter, payload dynamic characteristics, and special verification for payloads that may be classified as habitable modules.

CONT

Proximity operations... provide capabilities related to supporting safe operations with other vehicles while maintaining a habitable environment and supporting internal and external user payload operations. Vehicle is actively determining and controlling attitude nonpropulsively.

CONT

Numerous proximity operations near the ISS [International Space Station] have been and will be performed. Orbiters will continuously carry astronauts and modules required for the assembly, and the Crew Return Vehicle (CRV) is planned for emergency evacuation. The Automatic Transfer Vehicle (ATV) of the European Space Agency (ESA) will perform regular reboosting and refueling of the ISS. Other vehicles such as Progress, Soyuz and H-II Transfer Vehicle will fly for crew transport, logistics, and resupply. Relative positioning rather than absolute positioning is the major concern for these operations. Better relative accuracy will provide fewer correction burns, thus saving consumables and other operational resources.

OBS

proximity operation: term officially approved by the International Space Station official approval Group (ISSOAG).

CONT
