Animals of all types need to move to complete their life cycles, migrate between seasons, and find resources and mates. Ecological connectivity is a measure of how well habitat is linked together to support wildlife movement and natural ecosystem processes. Biodiversity thrives when wildlife and plants are able to move : ecosystems have improved seed dispersal, plant communities rebound better following events like wildfires, and wildlife populations have better genetic diversity. 1, record 1, English, - ecological%20connectivity

1, record 1, French, - connectivit%C3%A9%20%C3%A9cologique

Habitat fragmentation is the loss and subdivision of portion of a given habitat and the corresponding increase in other habitats in the landscape. It is one of the most important contributors to the loss of biological diversity in temperate regions. Because of fragmentation, large populations are being broken into local populations, and this can lead to extinction if the local populations cannot interact. 7, record 16, English, - biodiversity%20loss

3, record 16, Spanish, - p%C3%A9rdida%20de%20biodiversidad

Selective overstory thinning. A partial overstory cut is a type of thinning that is used in older stands where regeneration is established or will be established after the cut. These thinnings are typically designed to effectively remove some of the basal area in stands that are over 60 years old while maintaining the characteristics of the stand. Trees that display characteristics suitable for habitat diversity are retained. This includes vertical decadence, snags, species diversity and coarse woody debris. The spacing of the remaining trees is dependent on the amount of regeneration that is established in the stand. In some cases where regeneration has been previously established through shelterwood cuts or naturally wide spacing, some of the overstory is removed to allow the regeneration to develop into a multistory stand. 2, record 22, English, - multistorey%20stand

Indicator of Change. The indicator is used to denote either (i) a biophysical component or variable which is monitored to detect change in that component or variable or (ii) a calculated index of the condition of all or part of an ecosystem. Such indicators are considered to be generally unrelated to the valued ecosystem components identified for the assessment. Biophysical components or variables that are related to, and used to indicate the condition of, the valued ecosystem components have been termed surrogates. 1, record 23, English, - indicator%20of%20change

As an example, suppose an adult fish population has been identified as a valued ecosystem component in an assessment. Surrogate components for this population may include the species’ larval population, the species’ habitat, or a major prey species. An indicator of change, should the adult population itself or its surrogates not be amenable to investigation, may be species diversity within aquatic communities, or specific conductance of water. 1, record 23, English, - indicator%20of%20change

1, record 23, French, - indicateur%20de%20changement
