The Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, Manitoba houses several programs of Fisheries and Oceans Canada(DFO). It is a national centre of expertise in aquatic biology and freshwater and marine fisheries. In conjunction with the Bayfield Institute in Burlington, Ontario, the Freshwater Institute serves as a focal point of scientific research in the Central and Arctic Region and for fishery, fish habitat and oceans management programs that are operated primarily through area and district offices.

The predecessor of the FWI was the Central Fisheries Research Station of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. Established in Winnipeg in 1944, the station was moved to London, Ontario in 1957 and then back to Winnipeg as the FWI in 1966.

The United Nations Centre for Human Settlements(Habitat) promotes sustainable human settlements development through policy formulation, capacity-building, knowledge creation and the strengthening of partnerships between governments and civil society. In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly designated Habitat as focal point for the implementation of the Habitat Agenda, the global plan of action adopted at the second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements. The Centre, established in 1978, is the lead agency for coordinating human settlements development activities within the United Nations family.
