A mesocyclone is a vortex of air, approximately 2 to 10 miles in diameter, within a convective storm. In a mesocyclone, air rises and rotates around a vertical axis, usually in the same direction as low pressure systems. They are most often associated with a localised low-pressure region within a severe thunderstorm. Such storms can feature strong surface winds and severe hail. Mesocyclones often occur together with updrafts in supercells, where tornadoes may form. Mesocyclones are believed to form when strong changes of wind speed and/or direction with height("wind shear") sets parts of the lower atmosphere spinning in invisible tube-like rolls. The convective updraft of a thunderstorm is then thought to draw up this spinning air, tilting the rolls’ orientation upward(from parallel to the ground to perpendicular) and causing the entire updraft to rotate as a vertical column. 2, record 1, English, - mesocyclone

2, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9socyclone

The second scourge of the weather is hail. This has, it is true, a more localised effect but the havoc that it brings is considerable in the small area that it sweeps. The grapes which have been split by hailstones lose their juice which in turn causes rot to set in, which lowers the quality of the already greatly reduced harvest. Certain vineyard areas have installed anti-hail guns but it must be admitted that their success is far from complete. 1, record 2, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun

Frost is a risk well known to local orchardists, but the sudden hail storms which occur regularly between September and January constitute a particularly selective threat to the young fruit crop.... alternative means were sought to combat hail. One such device was the ’hail gun’, originating in France and first introduced into an Ardmona orchard in time for the 1986-7 season. Certainly not a recent invention and lacking scientific support for its efficacy, the hail gun has gained a strong following among orchardists. Costing about $30, 000 each, hail guns are electronically operated and powered by exploding acetylene; the benefits were demonstrated, to the satisfaction of some, during a damaging storm in 1987. Their precise mode of action remains uncertain. 3, record 2, English, - anti%2Dhail%20gun

Visually similar to a classic supercell, except without the heavy precipitation core. LP storms often exhibit a striking visual appearance; the main tower often is bell-shaped, with a corkscrew appearance suggesting rotation. They are capable of producing tornadoes and very large hail. Radar identification often is difficult relative to other types of supercells, so visual reports are very important. LP storms almost always occur on or near the dry line, and thus are sometimes referred to as dry line storms. 1, record 5, English, - low%2Dprecipitation%20storm
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 3 CONT
LP supercells... have little VISIBLE precipitation and most regions of the storm base are visible. The word VISIBLE is stressed here because these storms often contain very large hail which does not block light as much as rain as if issues from the cloud. LP storms usually have a striking visual appearance with corkscrew or "barber-pole" striations on the updraft tower. LP supercell tornadoes are often unobscured from viewing around the storm. Supercell [is] a thunderstorm with a persistent rotating updraft. Supercells are rare, but are responsible for a remarkably high percentage of severe weather events-especially tornadoes, extremely large hail and damaging straight-line winds. They frequently travel to the right of the main environmental winds(i. e., they are right movers). Radar characteristics often(but not always) include a hook or pendant, bounded weak echo region(BWER), V-notch, mesocyclone, and sometimes a TVS [Tornado Vortex Signature]. Visual characteristics often include a rain-free base(with or without a wall cloud), tail cloud, flanking line, overshooting top, and back-sheared anvil, all of which normally are observed in or near the right rear or southwest part of the storm. Storms exhibiting these characteristics often are called classic supercells; however HP(High Precipitation) storms and LP(Low Precipitation) storms also are supercell varieties. 3, record 7, English, - classic%20supercell

4, record 10, French, - avertissement%20d%27orage%20violent

Very low temperatures can cause the bark of tree trunks to split, especially in the fall or spring when the plants have not hardened-off (acclimated to colder growing conditions) sufficiently. Trees and other plants are more susceptible to damage from sub-freezing temperatures when they are not fully dormant. Late spring frosts can kill the tips of new growth and buds (fruit, flower, foliage), and can slow growth and deform plants, reducing quality or making them unsalable. 4, record 11, English, - spring%20frost

2, record 11, French, - gel%C3%A9e%20du%20printemps
