Pour que les chevaux qui travaillent régulièrement puissent le faire dans de bonnes conditions et sécher plus rapidement s'ils transpirent, il est habituel de les tondre dès qu'il fait froid et de compenser la perte de chaleur ainsi induite par des couvertures. Mais tous les chevaux ne sont pas tondus : ceux qui vivent au pré toute l'année et ne travaillent pas en hiver ne doivent pas l'être et conservent leur «fourrure» pour se protéger des intempéries. Mais en aucun cas, il ne faudra faire travailler (et transpirer) régulièrement votre cheval sans le tondre.
