Today's hairy bases are more sophisticated. A notable example is the Trak Speedex base(our Trak T-2400 ski), introduced for the 1985-86 season. It's a polypropylene base which has been scored by a laser to mimic the mohair effect.

Hairy bases. Traditionally, natural mohair, angled backward was inlaid in the ski base in strips or rectangles. As the ski slid forward, the hair lay down and the skier glided. As the foot pushed back, the fur bit the snow.

Hairies. The name given to the do-it-yourself waxless skis because of the hairy appearance of the finished base.
