A flintlock has three positions for the hammer: uncocked, half-cocked and fully cocked. In the fully cocked position the gun is ready to fire. If the trigger moves the sear just a bit, it releases the tumbler. In the half-cocked position you can load the gun. The trigger is locked in the half-cocked position and cannot release the tumbler ... After you fire the gun, it is in the uncocked position.

The soldier pulls the hammer back halfway, until it reaches a catch or stop... the trigger is locked into a safety position and cannot be pulled to fire the gun. The range of manoeuvre is very wide. Perhaps the most basic is the "kick turn". This enables a rider to do a 90 degree turn on the spot. It can be done on either a stationary or a moving board. The back foot should be right at the tail of the board with the front foot about half way along. The weight of the body is transferred entirely to the rear foot and as the board rises the body is turned through 90 degrees in the desired direction.

Bosik Consultants Limited operates the National Research Council’s Flight Impact Simulator Facility in Ottawa, ON. The facility houses a large pneumatic cannon (10-inch barrel diameter, measuring approximately 75 feet in length) employed to propel birds to their targets in order to simulate bird strikes with aircraft components. Aircraft components typically impacted include windshields, wings and empennage leading edges.

NRC' s [National Research Council of Canada] flight impact simulators or bird guns have three parts : a storage reservoir(tank at the back) pressurized to the test pressure; a step chamber(half of the reservoir's pressure) ;and a barrel with sabot arrestor. The sabot, which holds the projectile, must withstand the launch, protect the projectile and crush the muzzle arrestor so that nothing but the projectile continues on to the target. Adjusting the thickness of the sabot lining helps various sizes of projectiles to fit in the barrel. The firing mechanism uses a double diaphragm method. Each diaphragm is made of very thin plastic material(Mylar).

The melon's roots can be traced back to varieties brought over by French settlers in the seventeenth century. In its heyday, half a century ago, the Montreal melon was the Queen of Melons. Its delicious, green flesh was prized in the fancy dining rooms of New York and Boston, where customers would pay a big price for the pleasure of eating just a single juicy slice. A 1938 handbook Vegetables of New York claimed that "handled skillfully and intelligently, the melon produces the largest fruits of its type in American cultivation. "A single melon could easily reach 15 pounds! And its unique spicy flavour was the reason it was also known as "The Montreal Nutmeg Melon. "
