HALF SHIFT [3 records]

Record 1 2007-04-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Telecommunications Transmission
DEF

A form of quadrature phase shift keying where the quadrature component of the signal is offset from the in-phase component by half a symbol period.

OBS

As a result the amplitude does not cross zero, and this reduces the peak to average ratio. This has advantages for power amplifiers because it reduces the peak to average ratio and as a result it is used in the reverse link for CDMA [code division multiple access] transmissions.

Key term(s)
  • off-set quadrature phase shift keying

Record 2 2005-08-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mental Disorders
CONT

[Rather] than having the normal increased number of REM movements during the second half of the night, depressed patients show equal, or greater than equal, amounts of eye movements in the first half of the night. This so-called "shift to the left" and the shortened REM latency suggest that depressed patients have an altered diurnal cycle.(Kupfer, David and Ellen Frank, Depression, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Pittsburgh)

OBS

REM: rapid eye movements.

CONT

Sleep abnormalities in obsessive compulsive disorder are similar in some respects to those reported in depressed subject, in particular the shortened REM latency but not the increased REM density.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Troubles mentaux
OBS

MOR: mouvements oculaires rapides.

OBS

PRS : phase rhomencéphaligne du sommeil.

OBS

English

Subject field(s)
  • Treaties and Conventions
CONT

There has indeed been an interesting shift in the way in which international lawyers and diplomats have looked upon treaties during the last fifty years. A standard work on diplomatic practice was compiled by Sir Ernest Satow half a century ago... The chapters dealing with treaties... were based on the principle of the absolute sanctity of treaties once signed; they could not be altered or abandoned by one party to them without the agreement of the others, national necessities notwithstanding.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Traités et alliances
OBS
