  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
  • Biochemistry
  • Pharmacodynamics
  • Environment
DEF

The period of time for a chemical substance to lose half its concentration or activity due to metabolic uptake, decay or other chemical change.

CONT

Industrial applications require generally robust enzymes with a long half-life under process conditions.

CONT

... the half-time of PCBs [polychlorinated biphenyl] in soil has been estimated at 5 years.

OBS

In the pollution field, means the time necessary for half the amount of pollutants to lose their polluting effect on the environment.

DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Chemical reaction in which the rate of decrease of concentration of component A with time is proportional to the concentration of A.

CONT

In the course of a first-order reaction, the half-time t1/2 is the time required for one-half of the initial reactant to be consumed.... In first-order reactions the half-time is independent of the initial concentration of substrate.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Sciences biologiques
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Rugby
CONT

[In rugby, ] there are three kinds of kick : the punt, the drop and the place kick.... For a place kick the ball is placed on the ground, usually in, or on, a small hole made by the heel of the kicker's boot. The ball may be tilted in any direction to suit the kicker. Such a kick may be used for conversion of tries, for kicking penalty goals and for a kick after a mark has been made. It is obligatory to start the game with a place kick, to resume it after half-time and to restart after a try has been converted.

OBS

Distinguish from the "place kick" worth 3 points in football.

Key term(s)

French

Domaine(s)

CONT
