A large covered vehicle used for travelling over snow and ice, usually equipped with tracked wheels at the rear and a set of skis at the front.

With the challenging snow and ice landscapes of Canada in mind, Joseph-Armand Bombardier developed 7 and 12 passenger half-track autoneiges in the 1930s, starting what would become eventually the Bombardier industrial conglomerate. The Bombardier half-tracks had tracks for propulsion in the back and skis for steering in the front. The skis could be replaced by wheels in the summer, but this was not very common.

The first seven production snowmobiles emerge from the new factory in the winter of 1936-37. They carry the name B7 - B for Bombardier and 7 for the number of passengers - and are well received by customers.

Autoneige (half track) : Véhicule qu'on a vu surtout à partir des années 1930. Il avait une traction au sol à partir de chenilles avec des travers de métal ou bien une chenille en caoutchouc et possédait un ou plusieurs skis pour la direction. Le poids de l'autoneige doit être supérieur à 450 kg (1000 lb). Lorsque le poids est inférieur, elle est classée comme motoneige.

Les sept premières autoneiges de production sortent de la nouvelle usine à l'hiver 1936-1937. Elles portent la désignation B7, soit B pour Bombardier et 7 pour le nombre de passagers qu'elles peuvent accueillir. Ces véhicules connaissent un bon succès.

Face aux problèmes du transport hivernal, ce dernier [Joseph-Armand Bombardier] réussit en 1937 la mise au point d'un véhicule à chenille, soit l'autoneige, un B-7 communément appelé snowmobile, capable de circuler sur la neige et de transporter sept passagers. En même temps, Joseph-Armand Bombardier entreprend la commercialisation de ce véhicule; la Deuxième Guerre mondiale entraîne la suspension de sa production.
