The first really major breakthrough from an optical-communications viewpoint was made by scientists at Corning Glass Works when they developed fibers based on high silicas.... They achieved these low-loss fibers by a flame-hydrolysis method in which silicon tetrachloride with, if desired, a suitable dopant halide, would react with oxygen to form a white silica soot deposited on a silica mandrel. Rotating the mandrel and translating the flame back and forth causes a buildup of the white soot deposit. By varying the dopant concentration during this buildup, the Corning scientists were also able to achieve a gradient in the composition. Subsequently, the soot is consolidated into a clear glass by an appropriate heat treatment, after which the mandrel is removed. From this "preform", as it is called, a fiber can be drawn, those layers deposited first becoming the core and the later layers the cladding. 1, record 3, English, - flame%2Dhydrolysis%20method

When a partly developed image is briefly exposed to actinic light, the final developed image becomes reversed. This is because in areas where the negative image had started to form, the emulsion is desensitized by the oxidation products of development. The result is that the extra exposure affects only the shadow areas of the original negative so that the final image is a positive. This type of reversal is known as the Sabattier effect, after its discoverer. 6, record 6, English, - Sabattier%20effect

6, record 6, French, - effet%20Sabattier

The tabular grains are produced by the method of injecting the silver into the gelatin. Fuji and Ilford also make tabular grain films but call them by different names. In the chromogenic processes, three selectively light sensitive layers in the silver halide emulsion are exposed to light. Initially, a black and white, silver halide, latent image is chemically developed to form a negative on all three layers. During this stage, the developer used to convert the exposed silver halide to metallic silver becomes oxidized. The oxidized developer combines with color couplers initiating the selective formation of cyan, magenta and yellow dyes within discrete layers of the emulsion. The image silver is then bleached and unexposed silver halide is removed by fixing. 3, record 19, English, - image%20silver

Halide detectors are propane burners with a copper grid or ring in the flame. Air is drawn into the flame through a hose that can be directed to various areas under fumigation. If halide vapour, such as carbon tetrachloride or methyl bromide, contacts the hot copper ring, it reacts to form a blue-coloured copper halide. The intensity of this blue colour indicates the amount of gas present. This is a fairly sensitive method that registers the presence of a halide gas but does not indicate phosphine gas. 1, record 29, English, - halide%20detector

1, record 29, French, - halog%C3%A9nom%C3%A8tre
