Not to be confused with "passing shot winner". A "passing shot" is a shot that a defensive player is forced to make in order to place the ball behind the opposing net player. Such a shot may or may not go over the net or may or may not land within the opposing court. Successful of not, the attempt is called a "passing shot". And only if it is successful, does one call it a "passing shot winner". Related term: placement (generic term for any type of shot that is hit to an open area of the court; usually refers to shots made without much pass). A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used. 3, record 5, English, - shot
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 OBS
"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect]. 2, record 5, English, - shot

wheelaborator.... The [castings] are tumbled about in a cabinet on a horizontal belt and at the same time are subjected to bombardment by a stream of metal shot. This latter is maintained by feeding the shot on to the blades of an impeller. The shot are then projected centrifugally at high speed on to the castings. This method is more economical and admits of better control of the abrasive than is possible using air jets. The moving belt must, of course, be well covered with parts to be cleaned, and the impeller blades should preferably be of some hard metal such as high-silicon iron. 3, record 12, English, - shot%20blasting%20machine

A composite shaft [of a hockey stick] should be purchased for the shaft consistency, shot speed and accuracy and its lighter weight. These are the most expensive and have less durability than aluminum. The average cost of a high-end composite shaft is $90 with blade. Lower priced composites shafts are generally targeted at the recreational market, less advanced players or young amateurs. These shafts cannot withstand hard play. Consumers should be careful when choosing the proper shaft. Just because a composite stick is more expensive does not mean that it will last longer! 2, record 15, English, - composite%20shaft

"wheelaborator" : A machine used for cleaning castings. The latter are tumbled about in a cabinet on a horizontal belt and at the same time are subjected to bombardment by a stream of metal shot. 3, record 19, English, - wheelabrating
