Pressed wood is an engineered wood product made from wood veneers, particles, or wood fibers bonded together with an adhesive under heat and pressure. Pressed wood includes fiberboard, glued laminated timber, hardboard, laminated veneer lumber, medium density fiberboard, oriented strand board, parallel strand lumber, particleboard, hardwood and softwood plywood, prefabricated I-joists, and waferboard. Resins serve to bind together raw wood materials, such as wood shavings, flakes, wafers, chips, particles, veneers, fibers, strands, or sawdust, to form the pressed wood product.

An exception to the pressing methods discussed previously occurs in the semi-dry hardboard plants. Mats are formed at moisture contents of about 25 to 30%(oven-dry basis). Screens similar to those used in the wet-process line are used to transport the mats. During hot pressing, these screens allow rapid venting of the moisture from the mat. The bottom surface of the pressed board has a screen impression, termed "screen-back", like that found on wet-process hardboards. Only relatively thin boards can be made with this type of pressing.

The characteristic of fiberboard made by the dry process is that the moisture is removed before pressing and no screen is required. The result is a product called S2S(smooth-two-sides) hardboard.

The screen also permits escape of the steam generated in the final stages of the hot-pressing operation. The resulting product is then called screen-back hardboard, or smooth-one-side(S1S) hardboard.

La température des plateaux de presse est de 180°C environ, ce qui fait que la masse du panneau est en fin de pressage à une température d'environ 140°C. (...) Après cette opération le panneau peut être considéré comme terminé, cependant comme il sort pratiquement à l'état anhydre on lui fait subir un traitement à haute température (150-180°C) pendant 2 à 3 heures, dans une étuve spéciale pour stabiliser et uniformiser l'humidité des fibres. On accroît en même temps, dans une forte proportion, les résistances mécaniques du panneau, et sa résistance à l'humidité.

With the relatively new pressure-refined fiber, however, it is possible to produce medium-density boards using fiber from species having specific gravities much closer to that of the final board....
