Diatomite products that are further processed are called calcined and flux calcined diatomite. Most diatomite products are used in filtering applications. With a large particle size distribution, the smallest of the particles occupy space between larger particles. This reduces the rates of flow through the filter. The purpose of calcining is to reduce the particle size distribution. The use of the term calcined is ingrained in the diatomite industry and markets so it is used frequently, but diatomite is actually sinterized not calcined. Sintering reduces the size distribution by melting the smallest particles together. To produce calcined diatomite the natural product is heated to between 900°C and 1100°C. The high temperatures burn off organic contaminants, and shrink and harden the individual particles. Some of the diatom frustules are sintered into small clusters. The resulting calcined diatomite has a density of about 125 to 150 kg per cubic meter. Flux calcined diatomite is produced using the same methods except a fluxing agent is added before heating. 3, record 25, English, - flux%2Dcalcined%20diatomite

Molds are made when organisms are totally or partially buried in mud that hardens into rocks. Over time ground water may dissolve the organisms, leaving cavities shaped like their bodies.... If a mold was later filled with mud or mineral material, the hardened filling is called a cast. It is a reproduction that has the same outer shape as the organism. A cast looks like the organism itself, not like its imprint. The discussion paper examined the idea of utilising manufactured sand as opposed to the natural sands which are currently used. It was noted that in past attempts, the inclusion of quarry dust in concrete was unsuccessful. Poor shape and particle size distribution were identified as being the characteristics of the dust which led to poor workability and finish, plastic cracking and generally poor performances in the harden state. 3, record 41, English, - quarry%20dust

Niépce used pewter plates in his lithography business, and used various light-sensitive varnishes and pitches as a coating on the metal to record the image. His first success, 1826-27 was with bitumen of Judea coated on a pewter plate. It took 8 hours of exposure to differentially harden the coating, which was washed in oil of lavender diluted with white petroleum. The exposed areas were hardened and did not dissolve; unexposed areas remained soluble and were removed. 6, record 47, English, - bitumen%20of%20Judea

During the late 1960s, the concept of sulphur slate was devised. Molten sulphur was poured onto a belt moving under water. The water cooled the sulphur, causing it to harden.
