The 4096 Virus crosslinks files on the system's disk. It occurs so slowly that it appears there is a hardware problem. The crosslinking of files is the result of the virus manipulating the FATs [file allocation tables], changing the number of available sectors in such a way that the user will think the files have lost sectors.

Encryption, used in some access control products, can go some way forwards preventing direct hardware read access; a virus will not be able to read or write in a DOS-legal fashion directly to and from a disk which has been encrypted using a custom key.
