Boards : the stiff covers at the front and back of a book. Wood was the material generally used until the early sixteenth century, preferably oak or another hardwood to minimize worming. These covers could be very thick and often had bevelled edges. Pasteboard became popular in the sixteenth century; from the late seventeenth century on, it was supplemented by rope-fibre millboards. Strawboard first came into use in the eighteenth century. The boards were attached to the quires by the cords, which were threaded through the boards and secured(often by means of pegging). 2, record 6, English, - board

Mesquite [is] a hardwood that comes from a mesquite tree that is cut into chips and used in smoking processes to add flavour to meats. Mesquite trees grow in dry soils most notably in arid regions. When foods are roasted with a fire that includes mesquite chips, the food acquires a slightly sweet earthy and smoky flavor. Mesquite flavors have been developed that duplictae the taste of foods smoked with mesquite chips, allowing a variety of various sauces, meats, and other foods flavored with mesquite to provide a sweet smoky taste. 5, record 16, English, - honey%20mesquite

This is a fire of first importance--a fundamental fire used in many other lays and an unexcelled fire in itself. No arrangement of wood will burn so effectively, for none admits so much air to every stick from all directions. And no other fire will burn down to a uniformly spread bed of coals in so short a time. First place the tinder--birch bark, fuzz-stick, etc.--on the ground and build a tiny wigwam fire above it not over six inches high. Now place four base poles, each two inches thick and a foot long, around it, the corners overlapping log-cabin style. Over this lower course, stack up finger-and-thumb-size sticks of hardwood in crisscross fashion bringing the structure up to ten or twelve inches in height. 1, record 33, English, - crisscross%20fire
Record number: 33, Textual support number: 2 OBS
There are actually 3 types of the crisscross fire, but they do not have a specific name. However, the term "log cabin fire" has been used as a synonym for all three. But the term properly designates another type of fire. It is actually the beginning of a crisscross fire that does not have the logs stacked in the crisscross fashion over the tiny wigwam fire, but rather has them stacked around the wigwam fire log cabin style. 3, record 33, English, - crisscross%20fire

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base. 4, record 34, English, - wigwam%20fire

1, record 34, French, - feu%20en%20c%C3%B4ne

Pressed wood includes fiberboard, glued laminated timber, hardboard, laminated veneer lumber, medium density fiberboard, oriented strand board, parallel strand lumber, particleboard, hardwood and softwood plywood, prefabricated I-joists, and waferboard. Resins serve to bind together raw wood materials, such as wood shavings, flakes, wafers, chips, particles, veneers, fibers, strands, or sawdust, to form the pressed wood product. 1, record 38, English, - pressed%20wood

During the early 1900's, the Pinewood forests, including the land on which the preserve is located, were heavily logged. Virtually all virgin timber in the area was cut by 1930. The second-growth forests which emerged often were replaced by human development or converted into commercial pine plantations. Also, detrimental to the area's native species was the human suppression of wild fires. These fires once played an important role in the region's ecology by maintaining an open woodland and limiting hardwood encroachment. 3, record 86, English, - encroachment

A number of laboratory beating devices are in use around the world for routine testing and experimental work.... The two devices most commonly used in North America are the Valley beater and the PFI mill. The Lampen mill is more popular in Scandinavia, the United Kingdom and Australia. The Jokro mill is favored in Germany.... The Lampen mill consists of a hollow circular housing rotating around a horizontal axis at 250 rpm, in which a smooth spherical 10-kg ball is allowed to roll freely.... The pulp sample is milled by the rotating ball at relatively low consistency(3. 0% for softwood, 3. 6% for hardwood), providing a slow, gentle refining action. The main variable affecting the uniformity of action is the micro-roughness of the ball and housing. 1, record 90, English, - Lampen%20mill

For pulp fibers, many of the diagnostic features of cell formation seen in wood samples are lost. However, positive identification is possible by following a logical sequence of exclusion, and finally comparing unknown fibers with authenticated fiber samples and/or photomicrographs. The technique is straightforward, especially where only a limited number of choices are possible. The principal diagnostic feature is the shape and orientation of the cell wall openings(pits) in softwood earlywood tracheids and hardwood vessels which are unique for each species. 1, record 95, English, - ray%20crossing%20pits
