A system, applied to lumber(mainly hardwood lumber) that is likely to be cross-cut and/or ripped before use, which determines the grade of a piece according to the % of the total surface(generally of the worse face), as calculated in cutting units, that can be included in a specified number of clear face or sound face cuttings of a certain minimum size.

This option involves removing more than 50% of the tree basal area and is used if the stand is heavily damaged and/or recovering timber value is the main goal. High light reaches the forest floor, often leading to extremely dense regeneration... Heavy cutting may also lead to more abundant slash, damage or mortality of residual trees, and removal of hardwood species, leading to hardwood sprouts from the cut stumps.

Grapes are propagated easily from hardwood cuttings.... Three-bud cuttings are best, the nodes being sufficiently close together that the cuttings are not longer than 25 cm(10 in.). In preparing the cuttings, a cut is made just below the basal bud and 2 to 5 cm(1 to 2 in.) above the top bud. This method of cutting distinguishes the lower end which is to be placed in the ground.(The Grape in Ontario, 1979, p. 5).
