DEF

The wood of an angiosperm possessing true vessels, in contrast to the softwood of a gymnosperm, which lacks vessels.

CONT

The term "hardwood tree" is a botanical grouping of trees with similar characteristics. Hardwood tree characteristics apply to many of the tree species... The trees have broad leaves rather than needle-like leaves. They produce a fruit or nut, and often go dormant in the winter.

DEF

A spiny, deep-rooted tree or shrub (P. juliflora) of the SW [southwest] US and Mexico that bears pods ...

CONT

Mesquite [is] a hardwood that comes from a mesquite tree that is cut into chips and used in smoking processes to add flavour to meats. Mesquite trees grow in dry soils most notably in arid regions. When foods are roasted with a fire that includes mesquite chips, the food acquires a slightly sweet earthy and smoky flavor. Mesquite flavors have been developed that duplictae the taste of foods smoked with mesquite chips, allowing a variety of various sauces, meats, and other foods flavored with mesquite to provide a sweet smoky taste.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Xylology (The Study of Wood)
  • Types of Wood
CONT

... hard and soft wood occurs in different species of both hardwood and softwood tree species. Hardness is a function of the heaviness, or density, of the wood : the amount of wood material compared to air spaces. Hard woods are denser, soft woods contain more air.

OBS

Not to be confused with the timber category "softwood" which refers to the timber of trees of the Gymnosperm group.

OBS

softwood: term officially approved by the Lexicon Project Committee (New Brunswick).

French

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Plywood
CONT

Hardwood plywood is distinguished from softwood plywood in that the former is generally used for decorative purposes and has a face ply of wood from a deciduous or broad-leaf tree. Hardwoods include such species as cherry, birch, beech, chestnut, hickory, maple, oak, walnut, gum, and poplar.

French

English

Subject field(s)
  • Silviculture
  • Forestry Operations
CONT

This option involves removing more than 50% of the tree basal area and is used if the stand is heavily damaged and/or recovering timber value is the main goal. High light reaches the forest floor, often leading to extremely dense regeneration... Heavy cutting may also lead to more abundant slash, damage or mortality of residual trees, and removal of hardwood species, leading to hardwood sprouts from the cut stumps.

CONT

Annual litterfall, when coupled with measures of the humus layers, can be used to estimate rates of soil metabolism (respiration) and activity of detritivores.

CONT

During the first century of forest development(i. e., the period of hardwood dominance), but not thereafter, the annual litterfall was significantly correlated with three separate variables that are not independent as they are all a function of tree size : canopy volume... stem volume... and total basal area.

French
