For purposes of identification, the hardwoods may be divided into two general classes on the basis of pore arrangement. Hardwoods in the ring-porous class contain pores, that not only are very much larger in the earlywood than in the latewood but are arranged close together in a more or less continuous layer in the earlywood region of the annual ring. The diffuse-porous hardwoods contain pores of more nearly uniform size distributed fairly uniformly throughout the annual layers.

The hemicellulose units are distinguished analytically from cellulose by the greater ease of hydrolysis in hot dilute acids and by solubility in aqueous alkaline solutions. Pulping and bleaching are normally done at conditions which maximize retention of hemicelluloses because they promote inter-fibre bonding and strengthen paper... CONT

Glucomannan is high in fiber, essential for cleaning the digestive system. [It] is taken from the Konnyaku root and is from the same family as the yam, which is 100 percent natural dietary fiber without calories. Since lack of fiber is a major cause for the high incidence of growing gastrointestinal disorders, it is a valuable herb. It helps reduce cholesterol, helps maintain regularity and promotes bowel health. It helps to normalize blood sugar, to relieve stress on the pancreas and to discourage blood sugar abnormalities, such as hypoglycemia. [It] absorbs toxic substances produced during digestion and elimination. It binds toxic material and eliminates them before they can be absorbed into the blood stream. [It] acts as a prevention of chronic disease and a weight control agent. As a diet aid, it expands to about 50 times its original volume when used with a large glass of water.

Research into wood properties has been conducted at Oxford for over 50 years and the wood collection or xylarium now holds over 24, 750 wood samples. They represent approximately 8, 700 species, 2, 350 genera and 200 families. Microscope slides have been prepared for much of the collection, and the anatomical characteristics of every wood recorded on edge-punched cards. The collection of cards constitutes a key for the identification of hardwoods by their microscopic structure. It is used for taxonomic research and the identification of unknown specimens. Agronomic techniques used to optimize the yield of fast growing species harvested at short intervals.

A realistic study of short rotation forest plantations must include all operations from land conversion to the delivery of biomass to the final conversion point. This analysis includes the primary conversion to chips or chunks and their transportation to the point of use.

The Canadian and United States grading systems are understood by trade people familiar with North American products, but they are clearly much more familiar and at ease with Nordic standards. The principal reason is, for obvious reasons, the temperate hardwoods, where the United States standards have at least become a de facto industry norm.

Tree foliage is available in vast quantities and is utilized very little in Canada. Keays and Barton(1975) report that for softwoods, young tree's foliage is 25% by weight of the tree bole, and older trees 10% by weight; similarly for hardwoods the young trees have foliage 15% of the bole by weight, and mature trees 5%. This, however, is just "foliage", and for utilization purposes it is more realistic to deal in terms of "commercial foliage"(leaves plus twigs, shoots and branches up to 0. 6 cm(0. 24 inches) diameter).
