Since the early 20th century, scientists have discovered several types of "selfish genetic elements" that are present naturally in the genomes of many species. These naturally occurring genetic elements are able to enhance their own transmission relative to the rest of the genes in the genome regardless of whether their presence is neutral or even harmful to the individual organism as a whole, and thus they exhibit drive and are called "natural gene drives. "Examples of natural gene drives include homing endonuclease genes found in all forms of microbial life, transposable elements found in many plants and animals, and meiotic drive also found in various plants and animals. 4, record 2, English, - natural%20gene%20drive

gene drive: In English, a differentiation is sometimes made between a natural gene drive, a natural process of inheritance, and a synthetic gene drive, a bioengineered process. Space flight to the surface of Mars or other solar system bodies entails the possibility of carrying materials and organisms from the Earth to those destinations, and hence contaminating the planetary surface or atmosphere. This is termed "forward" contamination. The possibility that spacefaring crews landing on the surface of Mars or other bodies beyond the Moon may be exposed to harmful substances, possibly biological but more likely inorganic toxins, is called "backward" contamination. These two modes of introducing alien materials into a planetary environment are the focus of planetary protection concerns. 1, record 16, English, - backward%20contamination

Immunology is the science that investigates how organisms defend themselves against infection, harmful substances, and foreign tissue. In order for an organism to defend itself against such threats, however, its immune system presumably must be able to discriminate self from nonself. If the immune system could not make such a discrimination, it might harm the organism it is to defend, rather than the microbes infecting it. Self-nonself discrimination thus appears to be a crucial function of the immune system. 4, record 18, English, - self%2Dnonself%20discrimination

In 1997, in response to requests from SADD students themselves, SADD expanded its mission and name and now sponsors chapters called Students Against Destructive Decisions.... 2, record 47, French, - drogue%20douce

Alpha-gal syndrome(AGS) is a serious and unusual food allergy to red(mammalian) meat. It occurs in people who have been bitten by certain types of ticks, usually if they’ve been bitten more than once.... The saliva of some ticks contains a sugar molecule called alpha-gal(α-Gal). When alpha-gal enters the bloodstream, it can increase your sensitivity to red meat. This can trigger an immune system response. Your body reacts as if red meat is harmful, causing allergic symptoms. People with AGS may also react to other products containing alpha-gal, including medications and personal care products. 3, record 53, English, - alpha%2Dgal%20syndrome

2, record 53, French, - syndrome%20alpha%2Dgal

Genericide refers to the gradual process of a trademarked term becoming generic through use by the common individual. When a term becomes generic, the term cannot receive a trademark nor can current trademarks be enforced. This process can be harmful to companies, but they do not have much control over how the common person refers to their trademarked products. For example, "escalator" was originally a protected trademark used to designate the moving stairs manufactured by a specific company. Over time, the common individual used the term to refer to any moving stairs and thus ["escalator"] lost its trademark protection. 1, record 59, English, - trademark%20genericide

Unlike most other mammals, lagomorphs(including domestic rabbits) produce two types of droppings, fecal pellets(the round, dry ones you usually see in the litterbox) and cecotropes. The latter are produced in a region of the rabbit's digestive tract called the cecum, a blind-end pouch located at the junction of the small and large intestines. The cecum contains a natural community of bacteria and fungi that provide essential nutrients and may even protect the rabbit from potentially harmful pathogens. 3, record 71, English, - cecotrope
Record number: 71, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The rabbit consumes the cecotropes as they exit the anus. The cecotropes are nutrient packed, dietary items that are essential for the rabbit’s health. Normal cecotropes are dark, greenish-brown and resemble tightly bunched grapes. Each cecotrope is a soft, shiny pellet covered with mucus, and pressed into an elongated mass. They have a strong odor and contain massive amounts of beneficial bacteria that when ingested are re-established in the caecum. 4, record 71, English, - cecotrope
