Algae harvesting refers to the separation or detachment of algae from its growth medium. The harvesting method intensely depends on the physiognomies of the micro algae chosen, density and size of the microalgal cell, specifications of the final product and on allowability for reuse of the culture medium.... algae harvesting involves mechanical, chemical, biological and electrical based methods.

The cutting or harvesting of trees chosen individually or by groups, in an uneven-aged stand, in order to develop a structure conducive to the selection method, while providing the cultural measures required for tree growth and seedling establishment.

French

Domaine(s)

DEF

Record 6 2007-03-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Industrial Crops
OBS

This is now the most widely used harvesting method. After bogs are flooded to a depth of about 1 to 2 feet, machines resembling lawn tractors carrying large horizontal reels are passed through the bogs. These reels, about 1 to 2 feet in diameter, churn up the water and vibrate the cranberries loose from the vine. After the berries float to the surface, they are corralled to one end using large floating wooden booms. Berries are then conveyed off the water to waiting trucks for transportation to processing plants.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Harvesting Techniques
  • Silviculture
DEF

A tree harvesting method in which certain trees are selected for harvest and others are left on the site for erosion control, to provide wildlife habitat, for re-vegetation, to maintain biodiversity and to protect water quality.

CONT

The advantage of the selection method is that it is often considered to be less visually offensive than clear-cuts. Therefore, selective harvesting is frequently favored in areas where recreation or scenic values are important. Selective cuts may also be used to harvest timber from sensitive areas such as steep slopes or buffer strips where it is desirable to maintain permanent tree cover.

DEF

Record 12 1986-07-02

English

Subject field(s)
  • Forestry Operations
DEF

Logging method consisting of harvesting the total tree, with stump and roots attached.

OBS

To avoid confusion, it should be noted that whole-tree or full-tree logging is translated by exploitation par arbres entiers. Whole-tree and full-tree refer to the tree with branches and leaves, but not with its stump or roots and total tree or complete tree should be used when referring to exploitation intégrale, that is with stump and roots.

Key term(s)
  • whole tree logging
  • full tree logging
  • full tree harvesting
  • whole tree harvesting

French

Domaine(s)
  • Exploitation forestière
DEF
