Il y eut d'abord le chapeau élastique, vers 1825/30 qui semble avoir eu l'inconvénient de se déformer; il fut détrôné par le chapeau Gibus dont le ressort d'un maniement facile maintenait la forme très rigide lorsqu'elle était redressée; apparu en 1823, il fut porté, pour les soirées et le théâtre jusqu'au début du 20e s.
