Fish hatchery managers use their knowledge of fish biology, ecology, chemistry, and aquaculture technology to raise fish and shellfish in a wide range of settings. For instance, they may stock and manage fish in ponds, raceways, commercial net pens, and recirculation systems for the purpose of food or recreational fishing. In addition, managers employ administrative skills to manage a hatchery's business activities, such as ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, keeping financial records, and overseeing workers.

For hundreds of thousands of years, the wild coho salmon have returned from the ocean to the Pacific Coast, bringing with them huge quantities of nutrients for humans, animals and plant life. Recent efforts at Pacific Northwest hatcheries to mark the majority of their releases of coho salmon with a fin clip provide new opportunities to estimate proportions of hatchery and wild coho salmon in ocean samples... "Wild chinook salmon" means a chinook salmon that is not a hatchery chinook salmon.

CONT

Coho salmon and steelhead trout released from State hatcheries in Puget Sound are killing and eating federally protected wild chinook salmon.... Washington Trout and the Native Fish Society say that hatchery coho and steelhead juveniles are preying on wild chinook juveniles during the period when the young fish share the same freshwater and estuary habitats. The young wild salmon spend several weeks to several months in freshwater before migrating to sea. They are quite vulnerable during this period, and can be overwhelmed by large numbers of hatchery juveniles released all at once into a watershed.
