  • Woodworking
CONT

Made in the traditional form, this broad hatchet is a tool for rough shaping of material and can double as a camp axe in a pinch.

OBS

Broad axes(and hatchets) are described by the side of the log they cut. A right hand broad [hatchet] is used on the right hand side of the log(when looking down the length of the log.) Consequently, [it] has a head that is flat on the left side and a handle that deflects to the right(away from the flat face) so that it clears the log.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Human Behaviour
DEF

A culture specific syndrome from Malay involving acute indiscriminate homicidal mania.

CONT

... massacres in other cultures, including the murder/suicide known as Amok, which was first described in the Malaysian archipelago. The mass murderer in this situation is typically young, male and isolated, and usually has experienced some loss of face or humiliation... And when they decide that life is not worth living, they don’t just kill themselves, partly because in the Malay culture suicide is taboo. Instead, they take a sword or hatchet and run down the street, killing apparently at random until they themselves are struck down and killed.
