Enterprise data centers have an insatiable appetite for bandwidth. This is being driven by virtualization, cloud computing, storage area networks and a host of other factors that are causing a steady proliferation of fiber connections and ever-faster links.... Multi-fiber push-on("MPO") fiber trunks have become the default cabling solution to these ever-increasing data center bandwidth requirements. Because they are a natural fit for parallel optics, these fiber links are compact, pre-terminated, able to handle bandwidth all the way up to 100 Gbps [gigabits per second], and even plug-and-play by design. 2, record 6, English, - multi%2Dfibre%20push%2Don%20fibre%20trunk

Leonard Adleman, a mathematician at the University of Southern California, combined microscopic bits of DNA to calculate a well-known computer problem. A DNA computer processes each step comparatively slowly, but it can work on billions of sites at once in a cell or a test tube. The standard computer problem that Adleman tackled in his lab is one that seeks a route connecting seven cities, some of which have no direct connections between them, in such a way that a hypothetical traveller arrives at each city only once without backtracking. He solved this puzzle by treating the chemical units of DNA as computing symbols, then assigning a series of symbols to each "city. "He then used DNAs natural affinity to join its strands together to create possible city-to-city sequences. In a test tube, very short bits of DNA zipped on to other bits, until all possible routes to the seven cities were assembled very rapidly. This sorting of codes serves as a type of computation even though the DNA was doing nothing unusual. 1, record 19, English, - DNA%20computer

Wide-flange beams and columns were developed soon after World War I in Luxembourg. These have wider and thicker flanges than normal sections and the flanges are of uniform thickness, making the connections, splices, fixings, and joints much simpler and cleaner. In the U. S., which pioneered their use on a large scale, these larger and heavier sections were rolled with varying widths of flange for the same depth of beams, simplifying the range of connection details needed in complex structures. 2, record 25, English, - wide%2Dflanged%20steel%20column

Bureau of Meteorology Climate Classification.... Europeans have generally tried to classify climate... by the :-geometry of the earth and sun : the ancient Greek scholar Aristotle divides the earth's climate into zones according to the sun's elevation.-connections between climate and vegetation : Köppen(1918) chooses climate boundaries with a combination of natural landscape features and aspects of the human experience in mind.-annual water budget : Thornthwaite(1931) groups climates according to precipitation and evaporation.-processes that cause climate : Strahler(1969) relates climates to the air masses that produce them. High tunnels are not conventional greenhouses. But like plastic-covered greenhouses, they are generally quonset-shaped, constructed of metal bows that are attached to metal posts which have been driven into the ground about two feet deep. They are covered with one layer of 6-mil greenhouse-grade polyethylene, and are ventilated by manually rolling up the sides each morning and rolling them down in early evening. There is no permanent heating system although it is advisable to have a standby portable propane unit to protect against unexpected below-freezing temperatures. There are no electrical connections. The only external connection is a water supply for trickle irrigation. The ends of the tunnels are framed in, and may be made portable(removable) to facilitate easy access into the tunnel with a small tractor and tiller. 5, record 30, English, - high%20tunnel

In recent years, the multimedia revolution has created a huge demand for high speed connections to the network. Satellite systems have been designed to respond to that demand. In particular, regenerative satellite systems will form the heart of the next generation of telecommunications satellites. They will provide very high speed internet connections to corporate and consumer users equipped with small(60-80cm diameters) antennas. This is achieved by employing high frequency bands, multi-spot coverage areas and high speed digital signal processing onboard the satellite. 2, record 32, English, - regenerative%20satellite

When the SPARK initiative was first developed in late 1980's, it promoted science and technology in BC among a wide variety of economic sectors. Key players from leading BC sectors such as forest products, biotechnology, ocean industries and information technology, came together to focus on the strengths of their sectors and identity opportunities to make them viable and productive growth industries for BC. SPARK served as an effective conduit for industry discussion and networking for more than ten years and may of the valuable partnerships and connections that SPARK fostered have been pursued by industry specific groups and continue to have an impact today. 1, record 48, English, - Strategic%20Planning%20for%20Applied%20Research%20and%20Knowledge

In the student model, the confidence in the mastery of each piece of knowledge can be assessed not only on the basis of data extracted from behavior, but also in terms of the number and nature of genetic connections with other parts of the curriculum that have been made explicit by instruction. 1, record 57, English, - genetic%20organization
