... the solution — off-throttle steering — is now taken for granted by most PWC [personal watercraft] consumers. Many may not even realize their craft have the capability for good reason. The inclusion of OTS into most craft is relatively seamless. The system works by detecting two coinciding occurrences, the abrupt release of the throttle and a full turn to port or starboard. Electronic sensors note the two situations, and respond by increasing RPM [revolutions per minute] just enough to once again push some water through the jet nozzle. That small blast of propulsion is just enough to start the craft turning in the direction the driver has turned the handlebars, hopefully allowing the craft to begin an evasive maneuver and avoid the object in the craft's path. 2, record 1, English, - off%2Dthrottle%20assisted%20steering

A cutback is a surfing maneuver with which you change your direction on the rail by going back to the breaking part of the wave. See, when you’re at full speed, there's a big chance that you’re getting away from the breaking wave and heading towards the flat spots of the shoulder that don’t have the intrinsic power to carry you. So, you’ll lose speed, and you’ll need to get back to the wave to gain as much speed as you can. That's when you should perform a cutback. In that sense, a cutback isn’t only an aesthetic move, as it gets you back to the power source of the wave : its curl. 2, record 4, English, - cutback

CSU 89 was created as the result of the fusion of CSU 8 and CSU 9. The two groups have different clients and still hold their own separate meetings. Part of Architectural and Engineering Services/Property and Facilities Management, Real Property Services. "On April 1, 1996, RPS formally implemented a new organizational model based on Client Service Units(CSUs) and Centres of Expertise(COEs). The CSUs are a dedicated organizational unit through which services are provided to a singular client or a portfolio of clients. The CSUs are supported by COEs which act as stewards of skills and knowledge in RPS business lines and program management. COEs manage a resource pool that may dedicate people on a full time basis to a particular CSU or provide services from ’home base’ to a number of CSUs. The CSUs are revenue centres and the COEs are cost centres. The NCA plays a national role and as such, the CSUs and COEs in the NCA are called National Client Service Units(NSCUs) and National Centres of Expertise(NCOEs). In addition to the provision of operational services to the NCA, the NCOEs formulate policy, establish national product standards, develop new/enhanced products and services for delivery to the CSUs and oversee their implementation. The NCOEs provide functional direction to Regional COEs in support of Real Property Services nationally. The NCSUs provide a focal point for national clients and furnish functional guidance to Regional CSUs. " 1, record 11, English, - Client%20Service%20Unit%2089

This dip meter measures both the amount and direction of dip by readings taken in the borehole, and can be operated by using either self-potential or resistivity measurements. The instrument has a long cylindrical body in two parts, the lower part moving telescopically into the upper. Three long springy metal strips, arranged symmetrically round the body, have their upper and lower ends attached to the upper and lower parts of the body respectively. These springs press outwards and make contact with the walls of the hole. 1, record 29, English, - Schlumberger%20dip%20meter

If the strong horizontal temperature gradient associated with a front maintains a near constant direction through a deep layer of the atmosphere, the thermal wind component will have a constant direction through successively higher layers. Flashings are used to make watertight any roof area where the roof membrane terminates, is interrupted, or intersects an area or projection having a marked change in slope or direction... Flashings are generally divided into two categories : base flashings and counterflashings. Base flashings are, in a sense, a continuation of the membrane, turned up onto a surface that is in a different plane from the field of the roof, and installed as a separate operation. They are usually fabricated using a nonmetallic material, such as an asphalt-coated felt. Counterflashings, or cap flashings, can be of metal, coated felt, or other materials. They shield and seal the exposed edges of the base flashing. The combined use of non-metallic materials for base flashings and metal for counterflashings brings out the best in each material. Bituminous base flashing materials have the same coefficient of expansion and contraction as the roof membrane, and they work together as a unit. They are the only type of material acceptable for use in constructing base flashings. 2, record 50, English, - bituminous%20base%20flashing

Wind energy is the world's fastest growing renewable source of electricity … the atmospheric flows are strongly volatile, and therefore, the average wind speed at a given location is a very poor predictor of the energy output of a wind turbine. The basic requirement for wind power estimates is an adequate characterization of the empirical probability distribution of wind speeds since wind direction is less important because of the well developed methods of yaw control for modern turbines. The statistical description is highly simplified when a measured histogram can be accurately fitted by an analytical probability density function(PDF) with a few parameters. The traditional approach of modeling the wind speed PDF is based on the Rayleigh and the more flexible Weibull distributions. However, several authors noted that Weibull fits of empirical data have low quality at several locations, mostly over land. 4, record 53, English, - wind%20probability%20density%20function

... the TSB [Transportation Safety Board of Canada] analyzed specifically the aircraft steering system, while not ignoring the other factors mentioned above, although no indication was found that they could have contributed to the occurrence. To steer the aircraft on the ground, the pilot in the left seat uses the nose-gear steering wheel on the console to the pilot's left. During take-off and landing, directional control of the aircraft is maintained solely by the rudder. The aircraft's ground steering system comprises several components, including the nose-gear steering wheel, a system of cables and pulleys, and a steering control valve fitted to a nose-wheel steering cylinder, which is attached to the nose-wheel strut. The cable and pulley system links the steering wheel to the control valve. When the pilot turns the steering wheel to the left or right, tension is applied to the cables connected to the pulley on the steering control valve. This action determines the direction and the deflection rate of the nose wheel by allowing hydraulic fluid to enter one side or the other side of the nose-wheel steering cylinder; the steering cylinder then deflects the nose wheel through a system of gears. 3, record 57, English, - aircraft%20steering%20system

4, record 57, French, - syst%C3%A8me%20d%27orientation

GMR is based on the spin-dependent scattering of electrons travelling across metallic thin films. In its most basic realization, a GMR device consists of two thin magnetic metal films, separated by a non-magnetic metal. If the magnetic layers have a different magnetic orientation with respect to each other, the electrons scatter strongly in the trilayer structure and the electrical resistance is high. However, once the magnetic orientation of the magnetic layers is aligned using an external magnetic field, electrons with spins antiparallel to that direction scatter much less, and move more easily between the magnetic and non-magnetic layers-hence, the electrical resistance is low. 2, record 58, English, - giant%20magnetoresistive%20thin%2Dfilm%20device

Planetary swing-by maneuver [can be defined as] the encounter between a moving spacecraft and a moving planet or moon, affecting the spacecraft's motion like an elastic collision(in which no energy is lost to heat). Depending on the details of the encounter, the spacecraft can gain or lose appreciable amounts of energy, and appreciable changes in the direction of its motion can result. Swing-by maneuvers with the Moon have been used to reach the L1 Lagrangian point; fly-by maneuvers with he planets have played an essential role in space missions exploring the solar system. Lunar fly-by is similar and is also used. 10, record 63, English, - swingby

A feathering propeller can alter the pitch of the blades up to almost 90 degrees. That is, the blade pitch is changed so that they have their leading edge pointing right into the direction of flight, offering minimum resistance to the airflow. This mode allows the propeller rotation to be stopped, without adding excessive drag to the aircraft. Feather may be used to improve the performance of the aircraft after the failure of an engine, but more usually in light aircraft it is used in motor glider applications. 3, record 68, English, - feather%20the%20propeller

2, record 68, French, - mettre%20l%27h%C3%A9lice%20en%20drapeau

The Oshawa Railway Company was born in 1895, and effectively died on May 2, 1964 when the line was 100% dieselized by the CNR, however, power was not shut off until July 2, 1964. The OR was built, as most railways were, to provide both freight and passenger service. In the case of the OR, its operation was confined to the City of Oshawa even though they operated a number of passenger cars that would have been more suited to interurban operation. The main passenger line ran in a north-south direction on Simcoe Street, from Ross’ Corners down to Lakeview Park on the shores of Lake Ontario. When passenger service ended in 1940, several cars were re-distributed among other Canadian National Electric Railway lines where they saw many more years of use. 1, record 73, English, - Oshawa%20Railway%20Company

One type of scanner is called a whiskbroom scanner also referred to as across-track scanners. It uses rotating mirrors to scan the landscape below from side to side perpendicular to the direction of the sensor platform, like a whiskbroom. The width of the sweep is referred to as the sensor swath. The rotating mirrors redirect the reflected light to a point where a single or just a few sensor detectors are grouped together. Whiskbroom scanners with their moving mirrors tend to be large and complex to build. The moving mirrors create spatial distortions that must be corrected with preprocessing by the data provider before image data is delivered to the user. An advantage of whiskbroom scanners is that they have fewer sensor detectors to keep calibrated as compared to other types of sensors. 5, record 74, English, - across%2Dtrack%20scanner

The aspect angle... can have a significant influence on the appearance of radar imagery, especially when features in the scene have an organized linear structure, such as agricultural crops or geological structures. When a radar's illumination is oriented perpendicular to geologic features such as faults, lineaments and outcrops, [there is] increased contrast and shadowing of the features in the image results. This is a favourable aspect angle for the image interpreter, as terrain is enhanced. In agricultural applications, fields imaged from different aspect angles may result in different tones on the image because of row or planting direction. Vaned diffusers are used where importance is attached to the highest possible efficiency. By means of deflecting vanes in the diffuser guiding the flow in the radial direction, the velocity of the fluid can be reduced more than with a vaneless diffuser. In addition, the flow path through the forced deflection is shortened. Higher efficiencies and more compact geometries are obtained. Nevertheless, vaned diffusers also have disadvantages compared with vaneless ones : if the flow rate for a given vaned diffuser is much above the design flow rate, the profile losses increase considerably due to the high incidence angle. The efficiency then falls so steeply that operation is no longer purposeful. 2, record 88, English, - vaned%20diffuser

Free learning may be all very well and good for the future, but what about those of us who have already been through the system? How can we establish a more positive and fruitful relationship to learning? The answer, it seems to me, is to clean out the garbage, expand your learning skills, and then use those skills. It is never too late to start being a free learner. As a start along that direction, I would especially recommend Jean Houston's The Possible Human. Get together with some friends and start a learning circle devoted to expanding your learning capacities. You might be amazed at the results. 1, record 89, English, - free%20learner

1, record 92, French, - Programme%20d%27adaptation%20et%20de%20restructuration%20des%20p%C3%AAches%20canadiennes

An issue of considerable interest is the so-called multicellular thunderstorm system, as opposed to supercells, which are often presumed to be unicellular. A form of multicellular convection that has already been simulated extensively is the squall line. The typical method for simulating this form of deep line-oriented convection has been to release a number of laterally-aligned IB’s. After the initial storms develop, their outflows merge, producing a line of convection resembling a squall line. Squall lines are not the only type of multicellular convection observed, however. In isolated multicell storms, a succession of updrafts is typical. 1, record 94, English, - multicellular%20thunderstorm%20system

Thunderstorms are often classified into a spectrum based on their cell structure : single cells, multicellular storms, and supercells. The type of storm depends on the instability and relative wind conditions at different layers of the atmosphere(shear). The "single-cell"(unicell) thunderstorm is [a] three-stage situation... usually lasting about 30 minutes from the start of significant precipitation. A severe unicell storm is often referred to as a pulse thunderstorm.... In a multicell thunderstorm, several thunderstorm cells merge into a larger system. The cloud becomes divided into updraft and downdraft regions separated by a gust front. The gust front may extend for several miles ahead of the storm, bringing with it increases in wind speed and atmospheric pressure, decreases in temperature, and shifts in wind direction. The storm itself will have different portions sequentually going through the various thunderstorm stages. In many cases the immature cells develop along a line known as a "flanking line, "resulting in what is known as a line multicell. 6, record 94, English, - multicellular%20thunderstorm%20system

Shake, Rattle & Roll Poster. Shake :... The International Space Station undergoes oscillations. If it is given a slight push, such as a bump from the Shuttle while undergoing a docking procedure, the ISS [International Space Station] vibrates with a to-and-fro shaking motion. Student Activity : Docking the Shuttle to an oscillating Space Station is a bit like trying to toss a ball into a swaying bucket from a distance. The trajectory of the ball must be perfect(the launch speed, angle and direction) and synchronized exactly with the motion of the oscillating bucket. Try it. Student Challenge : Clamp one end of a 30 cm steel ruler to the edge of a table so that it sticks straight out. Bend the free end of the ruler downward a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Attach a heavy mass(approximately 200 grams), such as a large blob of putty or Plasticine, to the free end of the ruler. Again, depress the free end of the ruler a few centimetres and release it. Observe what happens. Try doubling the mass or changing the length of the free part of the ruler. Observe what happens to the motion of the ruler as the mass or length changes. Design an experiment to quantitatively measure the effect you have observed. 1, record 95, French, - vibrations

A bearing is a relatively inexpensive replaceable wear surface, which reduces friction between rotating shafts and fixed housings. The intent is for bearings to protect more expensive parts, of an engine such as the crankshaft and camshaft as well as the engine block and connecting rods. In addition, bearings must also support the moving parts. This requires that bearings be capable of withstanding very high loads which are constantly changing in magnitude and direction. These are commonly referred to as cyclic loads which may eventually result in bearing lining fatigue or flaking if the bearing material does not have adequate fatigue strength. 2, record 96, English, - main%20bearing%20lining

[Switching value is the] value that reverses the ranking of two alternative projects. For example, Farm A will produce beef with high technology equipment and few workers, while Farm B will consist of a low-technology operation employing many farm workers. Up to a weight of 1.5 on income going to the poor, Farm A has a higher rate of return. However, if a weight greater than 1.5 is given, Farm B will have a higher rate of return. The switching value, therefore, is 1.5. 3, record 97, English, - switching%20value

Strong wind, producing a duststorm or sandstorm, in central and northern Sudan. 3, record 99, English, - haboob
Record number: 99, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The name comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning wind. Haboobs are most frequent from May through September, especially in June, but they have occurred in every month except November. Their average duration is three hours; they are most severe in April and May when the soil is driest. They may approach from any direction, but most commonly from the north in winter and from the south, southeast, or east in summer. The average maximum wind velocity is over 13 m s1(30 mph) and a speed of 28 m s1(62 mph) has been recorded. The sand and dust form a dense whirling wall that may be 1000 m(3000 ft) high; it is often preceded by isolated dust whirls. During these storms, enormous quantities of sand are deposited. Haboobs usually occur after a few days of rising temperature and falling pressure. 4, record 99, English, - haboob

Safety is to be improved at the Homer Tunnel ... . There is only enough room for one bus at a time, the tunnel is not lit and there is no emergency phone within the tunnel itself. Sunday’s fire, although an unusual incident, is now raising wider issues for Transit including whether to make the tunnel two way. But tour operators say traffic flow was not to blame. David Kennedy of Destination Queenstown says: "The issue was a bizarre freak incident. A bus caught fire in the tunnel and whether it was a one way tunnel or two way tunnel would have been irrelevant, I think." 3, record 100, English, - one%20way%20tunnel

Much like the Alaska Marine Highway System, a staging area will be used at both ends of the tunnel for vehicles to line up for the next change of direction of travel. Since this is a one way tunnel, vehicles will have to wait their turn to go through the tunnel.
