In November 2019... Transport Canada accepted electronic visual distress signal devices(eVDSD) as an approved alternative to traditional pyrotechnic distress signals. Unlike traditional signals, eVDSD do not have an expiration date and are battery operated. When kept in good condition, these devices do not need to be replaced. Drained batteries simply need to be replaced. The main advantage of an eVDSD is that it reduces the number of conventional distress signals required on board. This lowers costs for boaters over the long run and leaves a smaller environmental footprint. 2, record 1, English, - electronic%20visual%20distress%20signal%20device

Image compositing... that is, combining images to create new images. Porter and Duff [PORT84] suggest that compositing is a good way to produce images in general, since it is fairly easy to do, whereas rendering the individual portions of the image may be difficult. With compositing, if one portion of the image needs alteration, the whole image does not need to be regenerated. Even more important, if some portions of an image are not rendered but have been optically scanned into memory instead, compositing may be the only way to incorporate them in the image. 1, record 4, English, - image%20compositing

In order to model the progress of an epidemic in a large population, the population diversity must be reduced to a few key characteristics which are relevant to the infection under consideration. For example, for most common childhood diseases that confer long-lasting immunity, it makes sense to divide the population into those who are susceptible to the disease, those who are infected and those who have recovered and are immune. These subdivisions of the population are called compartments... The SIR model labels these three compartments S=number susceptible, I=number infectious, and R=number recovered(immune). This is a good and simple model for many infectious diseases including measles, mumps and rubella. 4, record 18, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

[The Kermack-McKendrick model] was proposed to explain the rapid rise and fall in the number of infected patients observed in epidemics such as the plague (London 1665-1666, Bombay 1906) and cholera (London 1865). It assumes that the population size is fixed (i.e., no births, deaths due to disease, or deaths by natural causes), incubation period of the infectious agent is instantaneous, and duration of infectivity is same as length of the disease. It also assumes a completely homogeneous population with no age, spatial, or social structure. 3, record 18, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

A new ecclesiastical jurisdiction has been eating away at the margins of civil authority. It surfaced as the dispute over "Political Correctness"(PC) or the seizure of normally secular jurisdiction by campus "courts". This new orthodoxy rests on the premise that colleges and universities have a jurisdiction over the lives of their students that is independent of the law of the land. Warning : the English term "favorite", as in the phrase "The Women's favorite at the French Open this year is Mary Pierce" is, unfortunately, not seen in the press in North America as often as the more ambiguous term "top-seed(ed player) ". "Top-seed" can have two distinct meanings : 1) the one player expected to win the tournament 2) a top-level player ranked high who has good chances of making it through several rounds. On the other hand, the term "top-ranked player" is at times carelessly used as a synonym for "top-seeded player" or "top seed". One is "seeded" at the tournament level(Wimbledon, the Canadian Nationals, etc.), but is "ranked"(No. 1, 2, 3, etc.) either at the respective national or international(ATP or WTA) levels, especially if there is no mention of a tournament. No. 1 seed(or... seeded No. 1)=top seed=top-seeded player. Compare with No. 1 player(in the world, according to the computer rankings). Also, be cautious of the French cognate "favori(te) ", which carries a more subjective connotation, i. e. the sweetheart of the audience. The cow should be in good body condition(BCS 6. 0) at calving which will result in a thrifty calf, and will increase the level of colostrum produced. This will improve general thrift of the calf throughout its early life. The growing calf should receive adequate nutrition to maintain a body condition of 5. 0-6. 0, which will result in an adequate weaning weight, but which will not result in an overly-fat heifer. Fat heifers have reduced milk production later in life and this condition should be avoided. While creep feeding is rarely ever recommended due to high cost and minimal returns, it is still done in some situations. This practice may result in excessively fat heifers and should be discouraged. The heifer needs to weigh at leat 450 lbs at 8 months to continue through the cycle and meet the target weights without needing a high level of nutrition. 1, record 26, English, - growing%20calf

In order to increase the surface area of enzyme film per unit volume, various devices have been developed as practical equipment. For example, a spiral-type reactor.... Spirally-wound multipore biocatalytic modules have been shown to provide an excellent reactor configuration for the use of collagen-enzyme membrane systems. The spiral-wound reactor offers a number of advantages. It guides the flow through a number of organized flow channels which offer low and essentially equal hydraulic resistances. Therefore, all the fluid elements spend the same residence time in contact with the membrane unit thus ensuring good contact efficiency. The small fluid channels provide a large membrane surface area per unit reactor volume and high throughput. 3, record 27, English, - spiral%2Dtype%20reactor

Those happy people could have the last laugh if Ohashi and his colleagues prove their thesis which builds on a growing compilation of scientific evidence that moderate wine consumption is good for the heart. A variable camber flap concept is optimized to reduce the drag of a low speed light UAV [Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle] between its stall and cruise speeds using an in-house aerodynamic shape optimization code. The flap, which maintains continuity on the upper surface, was analyzed both numerically and experimentally and was shown to provide important reductions in drag when compared to the clean wing/airfoil in the lower speed range(2. 7% on average for the wing) and to have significant actuation energy savings when compared to a conventional plain flap(in the order of 40%). Although the concept uses current actuator technology and materials it is a good option for improving flight endurance/range at low speed over other more complex and advanced morphing concepts. 2, record 32, English, - variable%20camber%20flap

Auxiliary systems. The majority of modern aircraft, primarily the large transport type, are equipped with certain systems which are not necessary for the actual operation and flight of the airplane but which are needed for the comfort and convenience of the crew and passengers and are required by Federal Aviation Regulations(FAR). Some of these systems are important for the safe operation of the aircraft under a variety of conditions, and some are designed to provide for emergencies. Systems not essential to the actual operation of the aircraft are commonly called auxiliary systems. Among such systems are air-conditioning, deicing and anti-icing, fire-warning and-extinguishing, oxygen, and water and waste systems. All these systems are needed for the safety and comfort of crew and passengers on high-altitude, long-range airplanes; hence it is important the technician have a good understanding of their operation and maintenance. 3, record 37, English, - auxiliary%20system

If you want to draw crowds for the long haul, I think you have to commit to the "labor of love" philosophy which means losing money for a while while the reputation builds, and event afterward only breaking even with minimal profit margins. If you see restauranting as an investment for profit, you’ll probably end up disappointing both yourself and your intended customers. The success of Starbucks is a good study : a coffee house with comfy chairs, chic-metro design, bistro ambiance. It made Dunkin Donuts feel like McDonalds. Design matters. The customer experience matters. 3, record 49, English, - restauranting

Free learning may be all very well and good for the future, but what about those of us who have already been through the system? How can we establish a more positive and fruitful relationship to learning? The answer, it seems to me, is to clean out the garbage, expand your learning skills, and then use those skills. It is never too late to start being a free learner. As a start along that direction, I would especially recommend Jean Houston's The Possible Human. Get together with some friends and start a learning circle devoted to expanding your learning capacities. You might be amazed at the results. 1, record 50, English, - free%20learner

As the straw decomposes in the lake, it releases a chemical which inhibits algal growth. This method may be a good alternative to using copper-containing compounds since it is not known to have toxic effects on rooted aquatic plants, zooplankton, insect larvae or fish. Others can’t feel their feet at all. Thought processes become a little fuzzy... Muscle coordination goes out the window, and self-doubt casts a deep shadow over the soul.... Even if you’re racing at a reasonable pace and you’ve done a good job of carboloading in the days before the marathon, you still have only about 2, 000 calories worth of glycogen stored in the muscles and liver; that's about enough to get you to-surprise!-mile 20. The very weak output signals from the scientific detectors have to be protected from electronic noise, whether conducted or radiated, originating from other elements of the satellite. A stringent spacecraft design requirement, verified by testing at unit, subsystem and satellite levels, ensures full electromagnetic compatibility(EMC) between the onboard instruments and other subsystems. An important element in this clean EMC design is the spacecraft's power subsystem. It is based on a sequential switching shunt regulator, which provides very good efficiency and reliability as well as a low output impedance and constant bus ripple under all load conditions. 3, record 63, English, - sequential%20switching%20shunt%20regulator

Waves are formed due to the friction of the wind over the water surface. The three main components for wave generation are the wind speed, it's duration and fetch.... How to recognise a swell/wave generating area. On a weather chart there are high and low pressure systems. They are separated by isobars(lines joining places of equal pressure). Buys Ballot's law states :"If you stand with your back to the wind in the northern hemisphere, the low pressure will be on your left. "From this you can deduce the wind flows anticlockwise around a low pressure system and almost parallel to the isobars. The wind near the surface actually flows at an angle of about 15 degrees to the isobars pointing in to the low. The reason for this is that friction with the surface slows the air down and it is this friction which causes waves to form. Assuming you have identified an area of closely packed isobars which are almost straight for 200 miles and the low system is not changing to quickly, you have found a good swell generating area. 3, record 65, English, - wave%20generation%20area

Sheath-core fibers :... are those fibers where one of the components(core) is fully surrounded by the second component(sheath). Adhesion is not always essential for fiber integrity. This structure is employed when it is desirable for the surface to have the property of one of the polymers such as luster, dyeability or stability, while the core may contribute to strength, reduced cost and the like. A highly contoured interface between sheath and core can lead to mechanical interlocking that may be desirable in the absence of good adhesion. 1, record 72, English, - sheath%2Dcore%20fibers

The most controversial bit of advice Naomi Wolf gave Al Gore was that he shed his Beta male persona in order to successfully usurp the Alpha male now in the White House. Gore's problem is now trying to sell himself as a powerful, deminant, controlled super-male. If Gore really were an Alpha male, he wouldn’t need to pay someone $15, 000 a month to tell him so, and, ironically, he would’nt have been a good vice-president. What he should be doing is embracing his Beta-maleness and selling it as a welcome alternative to seven years of Alpha male weenive-rule. 1, record 74, English, - Alpha%20male

The first is those dangerous goods which have "served their purpose" and are now a waste, but retain sufficient danger that they are a dangerous good. These are referred to as waste dangerous goods and, in general, their shipping name is as it was before, with the word waste placed in front. This distinction marked the beginning of a revolution in marketing and technology that has had a profound impact on the shape of the values debate... Market segmentation targets those qualities that distinguish people from each other rather than emphasizing the things we have in common. It is the developed world's equivalent of the retribalization taking place in Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. And it has serious consequences :it becomes far more difficult to sustain a sense of national community, to build a sense of common values. As the slivering of America has proceeded, the received wisdom has become that common values are impossible in so diverse a country, and perhaps not a very good idea, in any case. 1, record 84, English, - retribalization

While Lindblom's argument applies most directly to public policy planning, it is also clearly relevant for organizational decision-making. Many managers are incrementalists; the strategy Lindblom suggests has been very effective for them and they thus have very good reasons to resist the intrusion of rationalistic computer analysts who aim at bringing systematic methods to decision-making. 2, record 85, English, - incrementalist

The high alumina(Al2O3 75-99 percent) ceramics have very good mechanical characteristics at room temperature and elevated temperatures. They also have good dielectric loss properties which persist at low and high frequencies. They can be used at low and high temperatures and have high resistivity, high thermal conductivity, and good thermal shock properties. High-alumina ceramic is one of the best all-around insulations available. It is produced commercially in compositions of up to 99 percent alumina. It has permanent dimensional stability, extreme hardness, chemical inertness, high strength, high impact resistance, vacuum-tightness, high operating temperature, and relatively high thermal conductivity. 1, record 87, English, - high%2Dalumina%20ceramic

From a pedagogical standpoint, Brown and Burton note that grading based on the number and type of bugs or misconceptions manifested in a test would be fairer and more amenable to proper remediation than usual grading schemes based on the number of right and wrong answers. Since this proposal for more informative grading is backed by a practical method and puts to good pedagogical use the ability of computers to deal precisely with complex information, I hope that it will have an impact beyond the research laboratory. However, more proofs of feasibility to publicize this type of knowledge-oriented testing may be required before it can be widely adopted, since constructing theories of bugs is a very laborious process. 1, record 90, English, - knowledge%2Doriented%20testing

"Psychophagi"(Castler's term) are hardly ever encountered among them. Feeling the beginnings of osmosis, which may come about as the result of purely accidental approaches and fluctuations-feeling this threat in a manner that is of course nonphysical, much as someone might sense another's presence or even hear "strange voices" in his own mind-the personoids execute active avoidance maneuvers; they withdraw and go their separate ways. It is on account of this phenomenon that they have come to know the meaning of the concepts of "good" and "evil. "To them it is evident that "evil" lies in the destruction of another, and "good" in another's deliverance. At the same time, the "evil" of one may be the "good"(i. e., the gain, now in the nonethical sense) of another, who would become a "psychophage. " 1, record 91, English, - psychophage

1, record 91, French, - %C3%A2mophage
