"Dwelling" is now chiefly poetic, or used in legal or technical contexts, as in a lease or in the phrase "multiple dwelling. These two terms and "house" have always had reference to the structure to be lived in. The other meaning of the word [referendum], and the one now meant in Canada, is the reference of a question to a popular vote, which is not binding on the government or legislature that referred it. A government or legislature may ignore the result and they have often done so. Originally, keyboard tablatures must have suggested a practical link to the keys of the instrument. Indeed, the anonymous tenth-century Bern organ treatise... describes the presence of pitch names, for the performer's visual reference, written directly on the keys of the organ. If letters of the alphabet could be used in this way, it is just as conceivable that numbers could have been used in a similar manner. Thus, the origin of "German" keyboard tablatures may be associated with the practice of lettered keys, and the origin of "Spanish" tablatures may, at least hypothetically, be associated with numbered keys. 2, record 6, English, - keyboard%20tablature

K+ channels are ubiquitous membrane proteins, which have a central role in the control of cell excitability. In the heart, voltage-gated delayed rectifier K+ channels, like Kv1. 5, determine repolarization and the cardiac action potential plateau duration. Here we review the broader properties of cloned voltage-gated K+ channels with specific reference to the hKv1. 5 channel in heart. We discuss the basic structural components of K+ channels such as the pore, voltage sensor, and fast inactivation, all of which have been extensively studied. 3, record 32, English, - delayed%20rectifier%20K%2B%20channel

Real prices are those that have been adjusted to remove the effect of changes in the purchasing power of the dollar; they usually reflect buying power relative to a reference year. Prior to 1996, real prices were expressed in constant dollars, a measure based on the weights of goods and services in a single year, usually a recent year. In 1996, the U. S. [United States] Department of Commerce introduced the chained-dollar measure. The new measure is based on the average weights of goods and services in successive pairs of years. It is "chained" because the second year in each pair, with its weights, becomes the first year of the next pair. The advantage of using the chained-dollar measure is that it is more closely related to any given period covered and is subject to less distortion over time. 3, record 36, English, - chained%20dollar

Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The saw operates vertically up and down. Operated by two men, a man on top, known as the "Top Dog", guided the saw as it was pulled down in a cutting motion by the "Underdog. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. The block can be taken off to allow the saw to be threaded through the saw cut. 1, record 62, English, - tiller%20handle

The Dominion Observatory was founded for very pragmatic reasons. The objective was to have a longitude reference(with associated time signal) for surveying in Canada :"To open up the West". Surveyors in the field would compare the time signal of the Dominion Observatory with their local time determined by astronomical observations-the difference corresponding to longitude difference between Canada's prime meridian(Dominion Observatory) and their location. Construction of the building began in July 1902 was completed in 1905. 2, record 72, English, - Dominion%20Observatory

The Dominion Observatory was an astronomical observatory in Ottawa, Canada that operated from 1905 to 1970. The Observatory was also an institution within the Canadian Federal Government. The observatory grew out of the Department of the Interior’s need for the precise coordinates and timekeeping that at that time could only come from an observatory. For several years they had used a small observatory on the Ottawa River for this purpose. In 1902 it was decided that Canada needed a larger national observatory similar to the Royal Greenwich Observatory in Britain. The new building was thus erected near Dow’s Lake on the Agriculture Department’s Central Experimental Farm land. This building was completed in 1905. Its main instrument was a 15 inch refracting telescope, the largest refracting telescope ever installed in Canada. While the building and institution were primarily dedicated to astronomical timekeeping in support of surveying, a number of other activities took place here. The Dominion Observatory was Canada’s leading institution in Geophysics for many decades, which included the operation of Canada’s national seismometer network. The facility did important work but with this bridgehead into the world of astronomy and the growth of the field of astrophysics Canadian astronomers quickly demanded a facility designed for the new scientific age. 3, record 72, English, - Dominion%20Observatory

4, record 78, French, - r%C3%A9golithe%20lunaire

Some have argued that the term "soil" is not correct in reference to the Moon because soil is defined as having organic content, whereas the Moon has none. However, standard usage among lunar scientists is to ignore that distinction. Lunar dust generally connotes even finer materials than lunar soil, the fraction which is less than 30 micrometres in diameter. 2, record 82, English, - lunar%20dust

2, record 82, French, - poussi%C3%A8re%20lunaire

Why would people want to read a book on CD-ROM ? ... My answer is, "I don’t know -- I prefer books, myself." So why did I do a CD-ROM? Two reasons: The first is exploratory, the second pedagogic. The first reason is that I feel a strong obligation to try to produce, use, and reflect upon all new technologies. ... But the second reason is more interesting. There are many things one can do with a CD-ROM book that are impossible with a regular book. For example, little demos, video asides, and active interaction. 3, record 93, English, - CD%2DROM%20book

A CD book is a computerized version of a paper book. It has a cover, you open it, turn the pages, go back and forward and at the end has a back cover. Unlike a regular book though, it can contain links. A link lets you jump right to the topic page that you are looking for, such as a chapter page or subject page. This type of book can also play music or other sounds while you read. A neat feature is that a CD book can also contain videos, something a paper book could never do. If you find an interesting topic or page, you can also send this subject to your printer and have a hard copy for reference(like having an instant copy machine). 2, record 93, English, - CD%2DROM%20book

2, record 93, French, - livre%20sur%20CD%2DROM

... many workers favour the idea of metal transport in chloride complexes.... Barnes & Czamanske(1967) have argued with reference to ZnS that bisulphide complexing is important and chloride complexing relatively insignificant. Helgeson(1964) contended that chloride complexing increases sphalerite solubility in chloride solutions when sulphur is low, whereas Barnes(1976b) has proposed that transportation as chloride complexes requires a solution to be virtually sulphur-free. 2, record 94, English, - chloride%20complex

The carrier landing pattern is similar in some ways to the type of pattern you would use at a land-based field. The major differences lie in the fact that at sea, there are few or no good reference points to judge your position relative to the ship. For example, on your downwind leg, rather than having a nice long parallel section of runway to judge your distance abeam, you only have a fleeting glance at the ship to judge whether you are too close or too far away. 1, record 96, English, - distance%20abeam

Generally, a person may, by reference, incorporate in his will the provisions of the will of another person, provided the other person's will is in existence at the time of the execution of the instrument in which it is sought to incorporate it. A will in the form of a letter incorporates the will of another person where the intent to do so is clearly and definitely manifested in the letter by unambiguous reference. Instances are to be observed in which husband or wife have, by reference, incorporated the will, or some clauses of the will, of his or her spouse.(American Jurisprudence, 2nd ed., v. 79, 1975, p. 425) 4, record 100, English, - incorporate%20by%20reference
