[Engineers] have tried to mimic the bats’ biosonar systems by designing a veritable zoo of bat robots. Indeed, reproducing the biosonar abilities of bats in a man-made system would do far more than just satisfy a scientist's intellectual curiosity or an engineer's play instinct. Engineers working in the broad area of autonomous systems, in other words, machines that can act by themselves, have long dreamed of taking the capabilities of their creations to new levels, and bats could be just the right model system to accomplish this. 1, record 15, English, - bat%20robot

Mortality is a key component to understanding population dynamics of fish species. All catch curves have three regions of interest : an ascending left limb, a domed middle portion, and a descending right limb... The ascending left limb represents age-classes of fish that are not yet fully vulnerable to the gear used in fishery. Fish in these age-classes are said to have "not fully recruited to the fishery.

Doorside pickup. A common way for customers to get their curbside orders is by retrieving them right at the front door of the business. In order to minimize contact and maximize efficiency, many stores set up a table with orders right inside their front door so customers don’t have to walk through the entire store or restaurant to retrieve their order. The table is typically front and center so customers know they don’t have to enter or go to the register to retrieve their order. 2, record 41, English, - doorside%20pickup

To study systems with large mass-to-charge ratios or systems that have very complicated isotope patterns, we need a spectrometer with the ability to accurately determine masses so we can be sure we are studying the right ion. For this we use a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer(FT-ICR MS). In this technique, the mass-to-charge ratio(m/z) of an ion can be experimentally determined by measuring the frequency at which the ion processes in a magnetic field. 1, record 43, English, - Fourier%20transform%20ion%20cyclotron%20resonance%20mass%20spectrometer

Incidental observations are casual wildlife sightings that happen when you’re outside – hiking, camping, swimming, driving, etc. Spotting a species in the "right place at the right time" can have a far-reaching effect. Knowing what species are present in different locations helps identify areas that are important(e. g. breeding sites, hibernation sites, migration routes, etc.), which also helps to improve conservation efforts. 5, record 46, English, - incidental%20observation

Chance observations provided the earliest data on raptor diet, and are still recorded today. These are the events all naturalists happen to see, such as a flying buzzard with an especially long snake dangling limply below it ... There was no forethought to go and record what buzzards were eating, but having seen something exciting the observer may want to record it in a local bird report or online. Why should a modern scientist bother with such unsystematic data when trying to make an assessment of buzzard diet? ... while such chance observations can’t be used on their own to understand common buzzard behaviour, they do supplement the more rigorous data collection and help to complete the picture of diet diversity. 4, record 46, English, - incidental%20observation

Culture is everyone's right and belongs to us all. Our cultural heritage, from great works of the imagination to art and culture in their many shapes and forms, belongs to society as a whole. Everyone must have access to culture, to understand and share in it, so as to enrich and stimulate their own creativity. This principle inspired representatives of the culture and social economy community to found the Journées de la culture in 1996. It was a symbolic cross-Quebec initiative, with the goal of making culture more accessible to everyone and by building bridges between the public and the culture community. 1, record 67, English, - Journ%C3%A9es%20de%20la%20culture

Tradable permits have been proposed as an alternative to the tax. There are two main possibilities :(i) estimating "reasonable" emissions country by country and establishing commensurate quotas or(ii) distributing tradable rights in accordance with some "equitably" criterion, such as equal emissions per capita(a possibility that has actually been discussed). Depending on how restrictive the aggregate of such tradable emission rights might be, the latter is tantamount to distributing trillions of dollars in discounted value and making, for a country like Nigeria, the outcome of its population census the country's major economic policy. If, instead, quotas are negotiated to correspond to every country's currently "reasonable" emissions level, they will surely be renegotiated every 5 or 10 years, and selling an emissions right will be perceived as evidence that a quota was initially too generous. It is unlikely that governments will engage in trades that acknowledge excessive initial quotas. 1, record 69, English, - tradable%20emission%20rights
