A central objective of population ecology is to understand how populations are spatially structured. An informative way of looking at this is to describe how species abundance varies temporally and spatially and then to identify the mechanisms that can cause synchrony.... Two principal mechanisms have been identified as the possible cause of spatial synchrony. First, dispersal between spatially structured populations... and second, the correlated effect of density independent factors that synchronise populations with the same density dependent structure... 1, record 7, English, - correlated%20effect

While there is difference of opinion as to what constitutes privity of estate in relationships outside of that of landlord and tenant, the weight of authority is to the effect that there is privity of estate when the fact of succession is found to have taken place between covenantor and covenantee, as in a grant of an estate in land made by one of the parties to the other. The modern rule seems to be that either mutuality or succession of interrelationship to the same rights of property creates that privity of estate necessary to enable a covenant to run with the land.(Cartwright, 1972, p. 729). 1, record 10, English, - privity%20of%20estate

If [we] look at the phenomenon of labour supply and the people already working in the labour force, it is true that the taxes levied on them do not have much effect on their incentive to work. We are not able to explain much of their behaviour or the economic phenomena as a result of changes in incentives. However, incentives still do matter for various sub-segments of the labour force. There is something labour economists call a heterogeneous response wherein not everyone responds to incentives and changes in incentives in the same way as far as their labour market behaviour and decisions. 1, record 18, English, - heterogeneous%20response

One of the recommendations of the panel that has attracted the attention of attorneys is that fingerprinting tests showing a phenomenon called band shifting be declared "inconclusive" until laboratories have performed adequate studies on the effect. Band shifting can make two forensic samples from different biological sources appear the same; private companies that perform DNA fingerprinting and the Federal Bureau of investigation have already made attempts to correct for it. But the McKusick panel was not convinced that such attempts protect those accused : a suspect could be wrongly convicted if the "correction" was itself in error. 1, record 19, English, - band%20shifting

Templets used in connection with studies for the figure of the earth and isostasy. In obtaining elevation readings from maps in connection with topographic and isostatic reductions, templets of plastic are used. The templets used in connection with deflection of the vertical studies have circles and radial lines drawn upon them, so proportioned with reference to scale of map and azimuth that elevations and ocean depths within each compartment formed by adjacent arcs and radii can be easily averaged and the effect of the mass therein on a plumb line at the station(center of circles), under various hypotheses, can be computed. The templets used in connection with gravity studies are similar to those described above, except that no account is taken of azimuth, all compartments bounded by a given pair of circles being of the same size and shape. A given templet can be used only on maps of the scale and projection for which it is constructed. 1, record 22, English, - Hayford%20deflection%20templet

During delignification, there is also a corresponding reduction in pulp viscosity.... If pulp viscosity is allowed to fall below a critical level, the pulp strength drops dramatically. Maintenance of pulp viscosity is the principal reason that the kraft cook must be terminated at a point where a substantial level of residual lignin remains with the fibers. A derivation termed the G-factor(exactly analogous to the H-factor) can be applied for viscosity reduction, i. e., combinations of time and temperature that give the same G-factor can be expected to produce pulp with the same viscosity. Since the G-factor increases more rapidly with temperature than the H-factor, it follows that higher cooking temperatures have a proportionally greater effect on viscosity reduction. 1, record 34, English, - G%2Dfactor

Optoacoustic detector. Light which is absorbed by a molecule is generally reradiated from the molecule in the form of heat. If a laser, at an absorbing wavelength of a gas of interest, is passed through a closed cell, the temperature of the entire gas in the cell will rise and thus the pressure of the gas in the cell will rise. If the laser is turned on and off at a frequency of 100-20000 Hz, the resulting pressure rises and drops can be picked up as a signal by sensitive microphones. This somewhat odd combination of optics and acoustics turns out to have several advantages over systems which measure the absorption directly. The absorption will be quite small and thus the change in intensity of the laser beam is nearly impossible to detect. Because pressure in the cell rises more quickly for small length cells, this effect exactly cancels out gains in overall absorption by making the cell longer. Thus, a small optoacoustic cell will accomplish the same as a larger cell making its size a great asset.... The device is being tested as a sniffer for bomb vapours and for ambient air analyses. 1, record 35, English, - optoacoustic%20detector
